About Patrick R.
Training, troubleshooting, and engineering support are three big passions in my life. I fell into the solar industry as if by accident, but I am so glad that I did. I fell in love with the industry. Helping the people in the industry is my passion. I started out my professional career in the U.S. Navy as a radar technician and operator. I always knew that the military wasnt for me(Not enough time at home). When I departed the Navy I was lucky enough to become a solar technician for Schneider electric. I learned so much about the industry and thats where my passion really started for solar. I realized that as much as I enjoyed helping the customers by fixing their equipment, I wanted so much more. I felt that there was a huge opportunity for my own personal growth for me to be able to help with larger and more complex issues over the phone or in person. I left Schneider Electric for a job at SMA america doing engineering support for SMA solar inverters. It was like joining one big SMA family. After about three years doing engineering support I decided I wanted to hone my skills in the training department. I am now the technical trainer for all utility scale products at SMA. Believe me when I tell you that you never know a product until you become trainer. You have to know the ins and outs of that machine to successfully train others(At least thats my opinion on it). I really enjoy teaching customers, field service technicians, service partners, and pretty much anyone that emails me or calls me asking for training. Im always willing to help. Regional Support Engineer
Responsible for data analysis of SMA’s utility and commercial grade solar inverters in the field. Duties include root cause fault analysis, formulating repair recommendations, generating non-warranty repair estimates, performing complex troubleshooting, and analyzing commercial and utility inverter applications. Occasional field work may be required. In the field, RSE will be responsible for performing advanced testing and measurement, root cause analysis, and directing Field Service Engineer support activities. RSE will work with low, medium and high voltage electricity, utilizing test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power quality meters, digital volt meters, and other forms of testing equipment. RSE is responsible for maintaining exceptional customer service activities through phone calls, emails, and while in the field at customer sites. Additional office duties will be assigned including preparation of work instructions and processing field work.Conducting advanced training of Field Service Engineers as needed.

• Over 7 years of experience with corrective and preventive maintenance on SPY-1 D(V) and SPY-1 B(V) radar variants. • Performed radar alignments and testing. Removed and replaced sensitive radar components such as traveling wave tubes, cross field amplifiers, and AC/DC inverters. • Operated and maintained an electronic cooling skid which includes heat exchangers, expansion tank, and centrifugal pump/motor assembly. Maintaining a SKID includes replacing valves, replacing pump mechanical seals, and cleaning out sea water heat exchangers.
