The Utility Maintenance Mechanic I is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and repairing equipment in twelve pump stations, storm water retention ponds throughout the City, and flood gates.  The Department of Public Works builds, maintains and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk's citizens, businesses and visitors, including the City's Street Network, Traffic Management System, Storm Water System, Waste Management and Recycling Systems.Essential functions include, but are not limited to:Monitors, maintains, and repairs equipment in twelve (12) storm water pump stations.Performs troubleshooting functions and preventive maintenance by inspecting, adjusting or replacing parts to heavy machinery and equipment.Evaluates function of storm water pond aerators and recommends repairs.Overhauls, removes, and replaces worn or damaged equipment.Operates pump station computer (SCADA) system.Responds to citizen and management inquiries.Reads maps.Climbs, stoops, bends, pushes/pulls, climbs ladders and stairs in various work environments, including confined spaces and underpasses.Lifts up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.Utilizes adequate hearing, peripheral and night vision, and depth perception to observe moving parts of equipment and normal hearing to detect equipment and traffic noise.

I obtained my class A commercial driver's License, and VDOT flagger certification. I performed construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, pavements, and bridges. I performed digging, picking, shoveling, and leveling. I operated various hand and power tools to maintain and repair of City streets and bridges. I helped build, repair, and clean storm drains by opening catch basin, removing debris, using machinery to break through blockages, digging trenches, mixing cement, laying bricks, fixing potholes throughout the city, setting catch basins, laying pipe and repairing cave-ins. I performed emergency and temporary repairs by removing ice, snow, and other storm debris. I also made temporary patches on roadways on rainy days. I was also responsible for cutting asphalt and concrete, maintaining lawns. loading, unloading, and carrying tools, equipment, and chemicals. I also made minor repairs to underground water service lines.

I was responsible for monitoring weight rooms, cardio rooms, circuit training rooms, men's, locker room, racquetball courts, basketball courts, and tennis courts. I was responsible for the safety and supervision of the fitness floor. Ensured that the patrons were utilizing equipment properly. I was responsible for cleaning of all fitness equipment and checking equipment for maintenance repairs and preventative maintenance. Provided tours and program information to future members. Provided excellent customer service in person and on the telephone. I also was responsible for providing fitness exercises for patrons ages 5-14 for NFWC's Youth Fit program.

As a cashier, I was responsible for handling money, ringing customers up. Used a forklift to load and unload material. Provided excellent customer service.

Prepared orders for customers and processed their payments. Maintain all paper records as required for health inspectors. Provided excellent customer service.

Worked effectively with staff, volunteers, and participants of activities. Maintained order and enforced camp rules and regulations. Accounted for money. Prepared accurate reports. Assisted in operating leagues, tournaments and daily programmed activates. Set up recreational activities. Ensured that there were enough participants for an activity to be able to take off.
