About Patrick Schwartz
I am currently a junior mechanical engineering student at the University of Notre Dame. I am looking for work in an industry where I can use my skills to make a positive impact on the world. I am very interested in the space industry, as well as renewable energy, and additive manufacturing. I have also recently gained an interest in controls and automation engineering and systems engineering from working on the control system of Iris, the project that I lead. I love learning, and I especially love applying what I learn to do something cool! A good company culture is extremely important to me. I am currently the project lead for Iris, a high-altitude balloon project. We are developing a system that can deploy from a high-altitude balloon and autonomously navigate from 120,000ft to a selected waypoint on the ground. This past summer I had the opportunity to continue my work on Iris developing the control system, designing a PCB, completing the structural analysis using FEA, and ultimately integrating our system with NASA’s BPO in Fort Sumner, NM. We were able to launch on the Salter Test Flight as part of their fall campaign. Outside of school and work, I enjoy many activities such as ultimate frisbee, soccer, hiking, camping, rock climbing, and traveling.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
CurrentI am developing a controller for a knee-exoskeleton to assist elderly people in sit-to-stand motion as part of Dr. Edgar Bolivar's Wearable Robotics (WeRo) Lab.
Duncan Climbing Wall Attendant
CurrentI work at the climbing wall checking people in, assisting with any injuries, answering questions about routes, belaying people, and setting routes.
Director Of Research Development
CurrentI oversee the development of new research tools that our club is working on. This involves investigating and learning new concepts that could potentially be helpful for our club to know, and then teaching them to the rest of the club. I develop tools such as simulators, computational methods, and other new techniques that are club will utilize now and into the future as we continue to develop our own CubeSat and targeted descent system from a High-Altitude Balloon. Right now, much of my work is focused on the Attitude Determination, and Control System (ADCS) of our CubeSat. I am researching and overseeing the development of different ways to take in sensor data and accurately rotate the CubeSat to its goal position. I am researching, building, and testing different Kalman filters and control strategies in varying levels of complexity such as PID, sliding mode control, and Model Predictive Control (MPC).
Chief Engineer Of Iris
I am currently the chief engineer of Iris, which is the high-altitude balloon project within the IrishSat club. IrishSat is a club at Notre Dame that is working towards launching a CubeSat through NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative. This year, Iris is focused on making a system capable of steering the payload of the high-altitude balloon to a specified point on descent for NASA's FLOATing DRAGON design competition. We were selected as 1 of 6 finalists in the country to continue development and integrate with NASA in August. I am leading my team in design planning, manufacturing, integration, and testing of our system. This involves communicating with my team so that everyone understands their role and clearly understands our design. It necessitates knowledge across a range of disciplines in order to effectively oversee each aspect of the design and integrate the subsystems effectively. I also did the CAD of our system and structural analysis on certain high stress components in Autodesk Fusion 360. We were ultimately 1 of 3 teams that successfully made it through the flight application and integration process and launched on the Salter Test Flight in August!
System Engineer
I worked as part of the IRIS high-altitude balloon team helping design and improve our system, CAD, machining parts, and assembling the structure.
Project Engineer
I helped design and fabricate devices and systems for people with disabilities so that they could still effectively do their job.
Quickbooks Assistant
I input business purchases, pay stubs, and checks into QuickBooks. I also organized and filed receipts for all of these items and reconciled credit cards and bank statements.
Office Assistant
I filed tax documents. I noticed how I could improve the process for renaming and filing the documents with my coding skills from my first year of engineering at the University of Notre Dame. I then wrote an app in MATLAB that automatically renamed and filed the documents as they were scanned in. I then taught my boss how to use it.
