My final year honours project was undertaken in the Wolfson Bio-imaging Facility at the University of Bristol. The project involved the use of both light and electron microscopy to study the recycling and sorting of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transferrin. This 8 week project started on the 13/10/2015 and is due to finish on the 4/12/15 under the supervision of Dr Paul Verkade. The main aim of the project was to validate an experiment performed by a group at the University of Massachusetts which showed EGF and Transferrin bind to distinct locations on the plasma membrane. Their experiment involved using Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy (TIRF) to observe only the first 200nm inside the cell. This technique increases the signal to noise ratio and showed EGF only binding to the periphery of the plasma membrane whereas transferrin was universally dispersed. They concluded that EGF and transferrin are internalised via distinct clathrin mediated vesicles and interact with endosomes containing Early Endosome Antigen 1. My projects aim was to recreate the TIRF experiment to determine if I could obtain similar results observed and then use a correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) technique in order to gain a higher level of detail on the internalisation and sorting events.

During my second year of university I was employed by the University of Bristol as a PASS leader. The main responsibility of a PASS leader is to facilitate the learning of a group of up to 20 first year students. Working with a partner I had to plan and execute a one hour session designed to allow the students to consolidate knowledge gained from lecture material and to promote scientific discussion. Planning and organising the sessions allowed me to interact and help settle new first year students into university life while also improving many skill such as presentation skills and developing new skills such as the pastoral aspect of the job.

Harrington Hall Nursery LTD is small family run business that produces a wide variety of pot plants. One of my current roles is to oversee a group of up to five in order to meet a production target. This requires organisation, effective communication and leadership qualities in order to regularly achieve. As a small business, over the course of my employment I have been involved in nearly all aspects of the business. My main area being in production but brief periods of time have also been spent in marketing, IT and office based tasks. As many different situations can occur without nearby supervision I feel my time spent working has given me independence, initiative and the ability to solve problems under pressure. As my time at the company increased, so did my responsibilities up to being left in charge for a period of two weeks in the summer of 2014.
