One of the staffed camps in the Philmont Scout Ranch Backcountry was named, "Indian Writings." At this camp, there are several activities that scouts and their adult advisors could participate in. One of the many activities Indian Writings offered was a tour of the several Native American Petroglyphs found around the camp. Before giving tours, we were required to gain a higher knowledge of the Native American population that inhabited the North Ponil Valley. We were giving a week to learn how to interpret the petroglyphs and were tested on each of their meanings. Leading petroglyph tours I had to be knowledgeable not just in relation to the interpretations, but be able to answer any question without hesitation. Never did I say, "I don't know" or "I'll have to get back to you." When the Camp Director of Indian Writings departed for his days off, there were several times where he left me in charge of running camp for 2 1/2 days. During this period of time, I was in charge of administering an entertaining program and monitor the health and safety of crews who participated in program and crews who spent the night with us. I was responsible for providing communication to Base Camp and other Staff Camps in the backcountry. This position boosted my skills in leadership, problem/resolution discussions, and spatial awareness.
