With PI Roger Cone, our lab works on the central control of energy homeostasis, concentrating on the central melanocortin system, a complex set of neural circuits they have demonstrated to regulate a variety of physiological processes important to energy homeostasis. I am studying the role of the hypothalamic melanocortin 3 receptor (MC3R) in energy homoeostasis, emotion, and reproduction. We are also evaluating the utility of MC3R targeting compounds for the treatment of metabolic and emotional diseases, such as obesity and anorexia nervosa. -
Neuroscience Doctoral CandidateUpstate Medical University Aug 2012 - Feb 2017My research aims to decipher the neural circuits in the brain involved in feeding behavior. Specifically, I am interested in understanding how emotion and memory regulate feeding behavior and the neural circuits that govern these relationships. To accomplish these goals, we relay on multiple cutting edge behavioral neuroscience techniques such as optogenetics, designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREAD), and electrophysiology. The long term goal of the project is to develop novel therapeutic approaches to disorders that effect food intake and emotion, such as anorexia nervosa. -

Using a rat animal model, we found that stress during adolescence is associated with increased levels of anxiety in adulthood. To investigate this associate we employed a variety of rodent behavioral studies of stress and anxiety including: forced swim, elevated platform, open field test, and novel object test.
