I recently retired from East Carolina University and returned to Boulder, Colorado, where I am Professor Emeritus in the Leeds School of Business. My past work involved directing The Center for Sustainability: Tourism, Natural Resources and the Built Environment. The Center advanced research and outreach aimed at affecting changes in business practices, public policies, and individual behaviors. The Center was originally established in Colorado as a Center for Sustainable Tourism in 1997, and relocated to East Carolina University in the fall of 2007. In the Fall of 2013 the Center expanded it's role to include natural resources and the built environment while retaining a strong focus on tourism and the unique Master of Science in Sustainable Tourism degree program which began its course offerings in the fall of 2009. At the Center, we worked across disciplines, often supporting inter-disciplinary teams for teaching, research, and outreach. Our collaborative approach capitalized on the intellectual wealth and institutional capacity that East Carolina University and the 19 campus's in the NC Higher Education system could bring to the study and practice of sustainability in tourism. I am proud that our MS in Sustainable Tourism-the first such degree program in the nation- was multi- and inter-disciplinary, and that the degree was conferred by the Graduate School.
