Ten years of experience in High Performance Computing (HPC) in a Unix/Linux environment. Assisted in the research to operations development of next generation Numerical Weather Prediction models. Solved problems involving inter-process communication in massively parallel and multi-threaded applications. Implemented Agile software engineering methods to lead a development team.Some Highlights:● Held a lead role in the development and testing of the Unified Global Coupled System (UGCS) weather and seasonal forecast model. This included leading weekly meetings, code management, and collaboration with other scientists and engineers.● Used modern Fortran Object Oriented features to develop the first version of the Interoperable Physics Driver (IPD), a software interface that enabled scientists to more easily test physics parameters with different models.● Delivered a two-day in-house seminar on Software Engineering fundamentals to NCEP researchers, scientists, and developers.● Wrote programs using C and a specialized API to process large weather forecast datasets for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fifth Assessment Report (IPCC AR5).● Automated the running and monitoring of thousands of massively parallel climate forecast simulations for the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis and Reforecast (CFSRR) project which enabled the project to complete on time and with 100% data integrity.● Developed tools to test the reproducibility of model output across different computing platforms reducing the time that would otherwise be needed to visually compare the data.

Managed my time between my visiting role at NOAA and my continuing role at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. After nine months I was offered and accepted a full-time position at NOAA.Some highlights during this nine month period:● Created websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, for the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis and Reforecast (CFSRR) project which enabled users to monitor the progress of simulations and view statistical analysis of the model output in near real-time.● Created a logo for the CFSRR project using Adobe Photoshop and other tools.● Assisted scientists and developers with debugging Unix shell scripts that they were unable to fix.

I began working part-time during my last semester at the University of California, San Diego. After graduation, I continued as a full-time employee. I mastered Perl and other languages and tools that were new to me as well as applied languages I had mastered in school such as Java and C.● Independently developed a multi-threaded batch scheduling application, using Java and C, for an Apple Xserve cluster system enabling scientists to securely run and monitor experiments. ● Refactored legacy Fortran fire weather forecast models improving readability and maintenance.● Collaborated with internal and external scientists on fire weather forecasts resulting in a published peer-reviewed paper on the work.● Re-engineered Unix shell scripts to Perl resulting in a 90% reduction in the amount of maintained code used for the Experimental Climate Prediction Center (ECPC) website.

Worked with cable installers to install residential high-speed Internet. Installed network hardware, installed software, and configured personal computer systems for Internet access. Educated end-users on the use of the software such as email and browsers.
