Profile bio

About Patrick Walters

I am a college professor, journalism scholar, and veteran journalist seeking to advance our understanding of journalism in the 21st century and prepare students to produce impactful journalistic work for all platforms. As a scholar, my research interests include the changing nature of media gatekeeping in today's networked news ecosystem, journalistic collaborations, media ownership, First Amendment issues, and literary journalism. I earned my Ph.D. in Media & Communication from Temple University in May of 2022. My dissertation focused on the ways collaborations are changing the journalistic field. I started as an assistant professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, in July 2022. Before that, I taught for more than eight years at Kutztown University in eastern Pennsylvania. At Kutztown, I taught introductory journalism, investigative journalism, literary journalism and mass communication courses, as well as a course on reporting, writing and consuming breaking news. I also advised writing interns and taught a capstone course for senior Professional Writing majors. I served as the advisor for the student newspaper, The Keystone, and chair of the university's Student Media Advisory Board. As a longtime journalist with The Associated Press and two regional newspapers, I have covered government and politics (local, state and national), breaking news, crime and justice, the casino industry, transportation issues and other beats. My work has appeared in publications including USA Today, the New York Daily News, The Washington Post, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. I have also worked as an editor at the AP, helping to craft news content and coordinate both short-term and long-term coverage.

Listed skills include Newspaper, Writing, Proofreading, Web Content, and 15 others.
