My time in the sales trenches provided me with a much better understanding of the complicated challenges customers face. Understanding the struggles each person is going through while trying to accomplish the same goal can't be overstated.In hindsight, the first time in operations we were so focused on developing the rental cooling tower industry that we overvalued the get it done at all cost approach. We had grown from $6M to roughly $20M in 7 years with a record high $42M while in the Business Development Role. The value of standardization, paperwork and processes is abundantly clear and in clear focus.By the time I changed employers, the team had become high functioning both in terms of delivery to the customer and owning / refining processes. "Operational efficiency" had become the goal and the business matured considerably over the last 5 years. Unfavorable conditions in the market resulted in headcount challenges and ultimately the level service I had taken so much pride in suffered. -
Business Development ManagerAggreko Oct 2006 - Jul 2011Aggreko Cooling Tower ServicesAs a Business Development Manager I primarily called on the power generation market in North America. Utilizing my operational experience, I was able to work directing with engineering and plant managers to solve regulatory issues related to thermal discharge temperatures. Other applications for rental cooling towers included cooling tower failures, lube oil cooling, air inlet cooling and spent fuel cooling in the nuclear plants. Prior to the economic collapse in 2008, I had the fortune of designing, selling and overseeing the installation of the two largest rental cooling tower projects in the world and had a market share over 90%. The effort not only propelled me to the top of sales within the business unit, but placed me in the top tier of sales in the global business.After the 2008 collapse my efforts were shifted to the ethanol industry. My time pioneering our solutions in this industry was rewarding. The people in this industry are innovative and are some of the best people you could meet. The market was working on slim margins but need was easy to find and creativity in negotiations often ended with a solution in place. With limited opportunities in the US market, I began working with counterparts in Mexico. Once again, the people were fantastic and generating interest seemed to be easy. After several trips training the local sales force on the opportunities to look for and numerous customer visits, we finally landed the first project in Mexico for my business unit. By the time I left the role, I had become the "go to" for the sales team when management wasn't available. -

With the purchase and creation of Industrial Cooling Tower Services, Aggreko had become the only company in the world focusing completely on rental cooling towers as a soul source of revenue.In February 1999 I joined to run the operations of the business. At the time of acquisition, Tower Tech had relatively limited success in the rental tower market save for one large project which drew Aggreko's attention. The business would finish 1999 at $6.5M in sales and 8 employees. As with most up and coming businesses, it was all hands on deck when projects came in. Wearing multiple hats is an understatement. Often times I would design / draw an installation, make the parts list for the technician, order the permit load truck, operate the crane to load equipment and then meet the last truck on site to aid in completion of the project. As a group, we were all passionately committed to one thing - The customer. At this point, very few people knew what a rental cooling tower was. Every sales call started with skepticism. After all, cooling towers in power plants and refineries are massive structures built in place. Who would believe a packaged tower that ships on the back of a semi-truck could replace a 50' wide x 250' long and 40' tall wood structure?
