I remember watching 'Star Wars' for the first time as a kid. My older brother had fallen in love with the series before me and was excited to show it off. Like my brother, I fell in love with what I saw. It was so strange and enthralling. Really what watching 'Star Wars' did for me was ignite my fascination with storytelling. I consumed books, particularly fiction, and read a lot of history growing up. Reading through the history of Rome, there were so many familiar story beats and dramatic conflicts of heroes and villains, light and dark.Through this consumption of stories, I also tried my own hand at writing fiction. Short stories, occasionally poems, a handful of attempts at a proper novel. One day, I’m sure I’ll finish a writing project, but regardless, stories have influenced me and the way I think.“Tell your story. Speak your truth.” It’s easy to get caught in the buzzword of storytelling, the nonsensical and oftentimes corporate meaning behind it. But stories are fundamental to mankind. It’s often how we’ve explored and understood the world, kept traditions alive, and, of course, entertained one another. Even as my life and career has taken me away from strict storytelling, the lessons I’ve learned over the years from it have stuck with me and informed the work I do and how I approach challenges facing me.
