I served as a full-time building substitute teacher at St. Bernard-Elmwood Place Jr.-Sr. High. I provided coverage wherever it was needed. On days when not assigned to a classroom, I assisted the middle school intervention specialist and worked with students on IEP's who needed help and support. Occasionally I was assigned to cover a classroom at one of the district's two elementary schools.

I served as a regular substitute teacher at the Springer School and Center, filling in for teachers and instructional aides in grades 1-8. This position provided excellent experience working with students who have learning disabilities. I learned much about the different kinds of disabilities they are dealing with and became more versed in strategies to help them. During my time at Springer I worked in every classroom but one and filled in for the art, music, and gym teachers on multiple occasions. From January 7, 2019 to the end of the 2019 school year I served as a long term substitute in an instructional aide position at Springer. In this role I supported the teacher in the classroom and filled in for her when she was absent. Duties included checking homework each morning, monitoring student engagement and assisting when necessary, grading math homework and daily fact fluency assignments, and working with students one-on-one and in small groups. Completed assorted clerical tasks and performed supervision tasks, such as cafeteria and playground monitoring.

Served as a long term substitute English teacher at Mercy McAuley High School. I was responsible for all instruction, supervision, and assessment in three sections of Mercy McAuley's Dystopian Literature elective course made up of eighty-two junior and senior year students. During this time I worked with them on a novel unit focused on "The Hunger Games." I worked with the students to connect this book to the broader tradition of dystopian literature. We explored theme, conflict, and characterization in particular. Created and administered a final assessment before the regular teacher returned from maternity leave. Worked with online tools such as PlusPortals, Dyknow, Blackboard and Kahoot. A great experience in the English classroom---so good to be back!

Served as a UC field service professor and supervisor assisting student teachers working to earn 7-12 licensure in Ohio for the English language arts. Supervised students in their placements; mentored and conducted formal observations. Assisted students with understanding issues related to instruction, learning, management, assessment, content area, curriculum, and planning. Worked with junior year students in practicum placements in the spring of 2017 at Oak Hills, Walnut Hills, Deer Park, Lockland and Clark High Schools. During the fall of 2017 I worked with students from this same cohort as they completed their full year of student teaching at Winton Woods, Dater and Western Hills high schools.

These students were assigned to Cheviot Elementary School in the Cincinnati Public Schools. As the on-site supervisor I oversaw their student teaching, advised, and conducted informal and formal observations. This assignment provided rich opportunities for mentoring student teachers and helping them find their way into the profession.

Taught two sections of Read 1005 (Reading Academic Texts), a course designed to help students become skilled readers of academic material, and to acquaint them with the variety of what constitutes “academic reading.” Taught students varied and purposeful methods of highlighting, note taking, summarizing, and outlining. Topics covered included text patterns; Cornell note taking; learning journals; Internet reliability; finding and reading academic articles; rhetorical analysis; language of propaganda and advertising; reading the languages of film, illustrations, charts, graphs; techniques for reading Shakespeare, older literary works, non-linear works, and poetry. Assignments included papers, strategy activities, and a final project.

I taught one section of READ 1003 (Praxis Focus). This was a special section of a regular UC reading course offered through the College of Education to education majors who needed strengthening of their reading and writing skills to pass the pre-service Praxis test. I worked with students on test taking and preparation strategies as well as understanding the nature and structure of the test. Students took a number of practice examinations which we reviewed and analyzed together. We also did specialized work on aspects of writing, grammar, and reading that are typical of the Praxis assessment. In order to boost overall reading and writing skills, students also read Jesse Stuart's teaching memoir "The Thread That Runs So True" and completed writing assignments that included a summary, a final paper, and journal entries. I taught this same course again during the fall semester of 2016.

Taught Read 1003 (Integrated College Reading), a course in the Language and Literacy division within UC's College of Education. Taught a wide variety of reading strategies designed to boost students' reading skills.Course elements included developing text connections; reading rhetorically; summarizing; assorted reading strategies to retain information and boost engagement. Students read two longer texts and numerous shorter pieces and completed a variety of papers, journals, and strategy exercises. Major texts were Jeannette Walls' The Glass Castle and Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried.

Served as a seventh grade English teacher conducting classes in a block schedule format. Responsible for all lesson planning and teaching, assessment and classroom management. Classes included all major strands of the language arts curriculum: writing, reading, literature, vocabulary, grammar and public speaking. Created interdisciplinary units for three novels combining history and literature. Was responsible for serving in rotating administrative duties with other staff. Served on school improvement committees; also served briefly as interim English department head for remainder of one year and was also junior high teacher association steward for two years. Earned my master's in secondary education while working at North College Hill. Resigned position to become a stay-at-home father, an experience which has taught me much about learning and teaching.
