Commercial and government contracting work to develop advanced sensors. Small company with the intent for it to grow.

Aug 2023 - Present

Chief Technology Officer

Orlando, Florida, Us

Created the technical concept behind the first commercial space lidar, still to be launched. Built a team of both employees and subcontractors to engineer the system up to preliminary design review. This included the space optics, laser, receiver, and timing. Managed the engineering team to achieve the vision, trading the system constraints, engineering constraints, customer needs, and physics constraints to design a workable system.Created a simulation of the lidar system to help customers understand how the lidar data can help to achieve their aims.Worked with the CEO on budget and corporate strategy to guide the program to successful long term operation.Successfully captured business to assist in the development of the lidar.

Apr 2022 - Jul 2023

Principal Scientist

Fairfax, Va, Us

* Systems Engineer from hardware through software, balancing the requirements through deep experience with creating sensors. Have engineered a new kind of airborne lidar system for bathymetry, from clean sheet to overseas deployments.* Computer Vision Leader specializing in structure from motion to achieve highly accurate understanding of camera pose and 3d world models. Provided the mathematics basis, system architecture, and continuing leadership to create systems that accomplish real time bundle adjustment for wide area motion imagery (WAMI). WAMI imagery is highly stable and enables higher level AI processing.* Project Leader working with customers to understand their needs and balance project budges, corporate priorities, and customer management.* Aircraft Integrator working to install sensors onto aircraft. Understand the ways aircraft are used when operating sensors, and the engineering of sensors to be compatible with aircraft and can accomplish the mission.* Controls integrator. Have defined stabilization system to steer the line of sight of cameras accurately, working with employees and subcontractors to achieve the needs of the program within the budgets and technical constraints.* Optics Integrator. Have worked to specify appropriate lenses for visible, MWIR, and LWIR systems, working with lens designers and camera manufacturers to achieve program requirements, considering resolution, stabilization, thermals, and vibration profiles.* Strategic director. Guide the direction of the company to technically achievable and useful technologies. Created a new high resolution WAMI sensor with stringent size and power requirements.

Director Of Engineering And Sciences

Logos Technologies

As director of engineering and sciences at Logos I had responsibility for the development of our team of mechanical, systems, imaging, and chemical engineers. We deployed our staff to work in imaging sensors, airborne platforms, chemical manufacture, and intelligence analysis tools.Cameras form the starting point for defense intelligence missions. But after the photons are converted to bits, those bits need to become information to people who make decisions. For Logos I have been managing teams to create algorithms which turn advanced camera system data into stable videos. Those stable videos form input into the next level of processing, either an analyst or an algorithm, to construct the narratives of movement that underlie the persistent surveillance mission.I've been involved in proposals, execution, managing, testing, and deployment, with such a range necessary because of the small fast paced environment at Logos.

Feb 2008 - Oct 2014

Research Scientist

Stamford, Connecticut, Us

Designed an algorithm to follow a coastline from a small UAV, including image processing, sensor design, and control. Implemented the algorithm on an embedded computer and successfully tested the entire system at a naval proving ground.Motivating force and lead on the proposal for the Intertrack project with NRL funded by ONR. This project combined logical inference, human interaction, and image processing to do a better job tracking vehicles through an urban surveillance network. Project was carried on successfully after I left NRL for Logos Technologies.Researched methods for using hyperspectral sensors to control unmanned aerial vehicles.Improved existing neural network face recognition software. Trained and tested a biometric face recognition system.
