CurrentI have seen a lot of changes in the physical therapy industry since starting in 2000. The profession has made great advancements, with the ability to help patients recover faster and with better results. Yet there seems to be an inconsistent delivery of these improvements, with the greatest barrier seemingly financial. Some patients have great insurance coverage, but many patients are now responsible for most, or all, of the bill. The PT industry has not been able to apply the advances of our profession equally across patients with drastically different out of pocket responsibility.Clinics with very high fee schedules such as hospital based clinics, have concerned PTs who try and protect the financial burden on their patients who have poor insurance coverage by discharging them too early, but don't apply the same standard when insurances pick up the bill. Other facilities that have lower fee schedules may see patients with good coverage for a very long time to offset the short programs from patients not willing to pay out of pocket for longer episode of care.I created FastBack Physical Therapy with the intention of normalizing the delivery of care based on need rather than form of payment. This includes finding creative ways to make PT more accessible to patients with high out-of-pocket cost. This will allow orthopedic conditions to be handled earlier, rather than letting them progress into something much worse. It also includes specific programming to prevent excessively long treatment programs when insurance coverage is very good. My goal is to enhance the quality of my patient’s lives, while understanding the financial liability that must be taken into consideration in order to avoid both under- and over- treatment with physical therapy.
