I never would have guessed over 20 years ago that the primary focus of my practice today would be serving lawyers and their clients in disputes and litigation, corporations and their board of directors in investigations, and organizations in compliance-related reviews. Starting my career in the fall of 1995 in the audit practice of Arthur Andersen – a firm I had been introduced to back in 1991 during my high school senior career week – I was convinced I was there to stay, in good times and in bad. Obviously, I had no idea how bad it could get when in 2002 the firm sank faster than the Titanic. Luckily I was able to jump on a life boat with several other professionals who still remain some of the most influential and important professionals, mentors, and friends in my career and life. It was during that voyage when I realized that my career was missing the passion that I needed to remain motivated and interested in serving my clients and growing my own skillset. Ultimately, I leaped into the world of forensic accounting! It’s nothing like the forensic science and CSI-type shows on TV, but the overall subject matter allowed me to focus on the tasks that I most enjoyed performing in public accounting – adding value to my clients and digging deep into the details. A fairly smooth transition took place as I moved from financial statement audits to fraud investigations – one was a mile wide and an inch deep; the other an inch wide and a mile deep. Then, by some luck and circumstance, I discovered and learned the other part of forensic accounting – dispute resolution and litigation support.
