Researcher
As a researcher in the lab of Dr. Richard Woodruff at West Chester University, I worked on two project, both of which yielded first-author papers. The first used fluorescent dye and chemical antagonists to elucidate the signal transduction cascade that starts with calmodulin passing through O. fasciatus oocyte gap junctions and ends in the endocytic uptake of yolk precursor proteins. The second showed that endocytic activity can be stimulated in Drosophila oocytes by foreign yolk protein. It was shown that a protein that was previously thought to have a structure specific to the species of insect, vitellin, is in fact conserved throughout a number of Orders. Drosophila incubated in the presence of foreign yolk protein began endocytic uptake and sequestered the ectopic yolk into nascent yolk spheres inside its oocyte. These findings lead us to propose what other proteins have been evolutionarily conserved.I presented both projects as posters at area symposia:Gap Junction-Transmitted CaM Acitvates the Signal Cascade for Endocytosis of Yolk Precursor in Oncopeltus.
