Patrick De Boever worked as a project manager and team leader at VITO, Flanders’ research and technology organization on cleantech and sustainable development. He was the team leader of the MONA group focusing on retinal image analysis, with a particular interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence for screening and diagnosis in medical applications. The Laboratory for Microbiology investigates microbial ecosystems and microbial physiology in harsh environments from subsurface to space. My role was to start up the laboratory, to develop and follow up research projects, and to give expert advice to agencies such as European Space Agency (ESA) and Nationale Instelling for Radioactief Afval en verrijkte Splijtstoffen (NIRAS).

In collaboration with SMEs, my role in the Laboratory for Plant Physiology was to prepare a safety evaluation report of the non-caloric sweetener stevioside and to develop a formulation for dosage of the sweetener.

The Laboratory of Microbial Ecology and Technology (LabMET) studies microbial ecosystems in diverse environments. I have been working in this team for 5 years to investigate gut flora dynamics and probiotics.
