Patrick De Smet received his degree in computer science engineering from Ghent University, Belgium, in 1995. Later that year, he joined the Department for Telecommunications and Information Processing (TELIN) of Ghent University.He obtained his PhD in computer science engineering from Ghent University in 2002, for his research on motion-based segmentation of video sequences and watershed-based image segmentation algorithms.In 2003 he initiated several new directions of research that studied forensic ICT techniques and other investigative computing technologies. Subsequently, he left IPI/TELIN in June 2005 and joined the Belgian National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology (NICC/INCC) where he continues his work on forensic 2D- and 3D-imaging analysis and image quality improvement, forensic IT and computing technologies related to automated reconstruction of ripped-up and shredded documents, and recovery and repair of damaged multimedia data.His other research interests include (MPEG audio) multimedia compression standards, electronic information security and privacy issues, and several other computer science research topics.Since November 2019 Patrick holds the position of Chair of the European Network of Forensic Science Institute (enfsi.eu) Digital Imaging Working Group.Specialties: 2D/3D forensic imaging; forensic image and video quality improvement; digital file recovery, repair and analysis; automated document reconstruction
