The cadet cadre, surrounded by a hierarchy of adult instructors and school administration, provided on-the-ground, in-the-barracks, everyday leadership for the entire cadet population and proved an invaluable resource for encouraging those cadets with minor disciplinary or academic shortcomings.SJNMA taught me the importance of reserving judgment of a situation until you yourself have been immersed in that situation. I confess that I expected the cadets to be those young men who were only at SJMNA as a last academic and behavioral resort. What I found in my experience were young men from diverse cultures who were like any others their age. I had the privilege of having in my classes some of the finest, most brilliant, enthusiastic, and personable young people I’ve ever taught. As with previous teaching assignments, I found my time at SJNMA to be one of personal growth and development that I’d never trade even if I could.

Coached the freshman girls’ volleyball team and assisted with coaching duties for the girls’ varsity volleyball team.Personal: As a teacher in the classroom, I was the expert in both theory and application; however, on the volleyball court, I was much more the former than the latter. The days of playing on my high school’s State-Champion volleyball team were long gone, and, at my advanced age of 26, the mind was willing but the body was, well, not so much.Coaching gave me first-hand experience from a leader’s perspective with a quintessential leadership lesson: surround yourself with people more talented than you. Was it a blow to my ego, initially, to not be able to perform to their level or to the level of my expectations of myself? Without a doubt; I was frustrated that I wasn’t always able to effectively demonstrate the skills I was trying to impart to them. Were there times when I let that get the better of me? You bet. But, at the end of the day, I had to simply realize that it wasn’t about me. And certainly today, in similar instances - and even on teams and in situations where I can perform as well as others – bringing what I can to the table and celebrating and leveraging the strengths and talents of fellow team members has proven critical to the success of all involved.
