Through intensive tutoring, mentoring, and leadership development, HighSight takes moderately and low-performing middle school youth, provides them with scholarships to Chicago Catholic and private schools, helps transform them into honor-roll students, and supports them in applying to the top tiers of American colleges. 100% of HighSight scholars enroll in four-year institutions, with three-quarters of them graduating in four years, well above the national average.

Founding Executive Director
As a long-term consultant, led the launch of this citywide integrated-learning intermediary, in partnership with Tulsa Public Schools and dozens of community agencies and organizations, serving more than 2,000 youth annually. ✔ Created the AfterOpp, a middle-school “campus” model that provided more than a dozen on-going after-school clubs and learning experiences at each participating school, serving hundreds of youth across the city, connecting them with programs of their choice led by nonprofit organizations, teachers, and other interested providers. ✔ Developed a multilevel continuous quality-improvement system, including citywide data collection of participation in youth-development programs, assessing the quality of the programs, measuring learning and skill development, and aligning these with a collaborative professional learning network and training sessions that continually upgraded the effort. ✔ After playing a key role in securing a five-year multimillion-dollar grant securing the project, co-chaired the creation of Relate 918, part of a six-city project funded by the Wallace Foundation, building best practices for schools and out-of-school providers to collaborate on building the social and emotional skills of nearly 3,000 elementary-school students.✔ Piloted efforts for high-school students to earn community college “prior-learning credit” for their participation in rigorous, hands-on learning experience in the community, through development programs and career-connected “pre-internship” experiences.✔ With my staff, facilitated a six-month design process with more than 70 youth-serving community partners, creating the organization’s strategic direction along five strands of work: experiential learning, social and emotional skill-building, career linkages, data and assessment, professional learning.
Special Projects Adviser
As a full-time consultant, I led special projects for this digital literacy-learning organization, more than doubling the use of their online products among my targeted clients. My efforts included: :✔ Expanding partnerships with urban Catholic schools in four dioceses in the New York tri-state area, including: stabilizing struggling relationships with schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City; expanding use by schools throughout northern New Jersey, and launching a partnership with an inner-city collaborative of schools in Bridgeport, Conn. All these partnerships have continued to grow and thrive.✔ Working with the product-development team to revamp their online and print platforms to work more effectively in a new market of partners who were using the program in after-school and summer-learning enrichment programs. These efforts resulted the client’s board of director revamping their business model to increase the focus on out-of-school resources.✔ Developing relationships with colleagues in California’s robust after-school program networks, building working connections with multiple partners that the client continues to expand as a critical part of their overall business growth strategy.✔ Revamping the training and technical-assistance processes for teachers, youth workers, and the client’s field staff.✔ Playing a key role with the development team in securing hundreds of thousands of dollars from individuals supporting my client’s efforts with Catholic schools.
Director Of Expanded Learning
I worked with schools, teachers, and community-based educators to link school-day and after-school learning in a joint position with the school district and the local after-school intermediary,HIGHLIGHTS of this work have included:✔ Creation of expanded learning opportunities for more than 500 high-school students, providing real-world, community-based learning experiences, an effort which is being tapped by the school district to serve as a key pathway to connect students to career and college options;✔ Launch of AfterZone summer programming, serving over 700 middle-school students each year through intensive STEM-focused and applied mathematics learning activities, including intensive partnerships with community gardening initiatives, STEM-learning programs, and environmental stewardship initiatives which also dressed diversity, inclusion, and equity issues.
Deputy Director
I was a founding director of PASA and the primary architect of the program partnerships for this nationally recognized after-school effort, launched by the Mayor of Providence, a city with the third highest poverty rate in the country. I led more than 100 staff and community partners serving more than 40% of middle-school students (more than 1,800 a year).Despite serving a higher-than-district-average number of student who are in English as a Second Language programs, in special education, and eligible for free/reduced lunch, those participating 32 or more days per year experienced:- A 25% reduction in truancy;- Higher grade-point averages and scores in state tests;- Higher degrees of "connectedness" to school, parents and other adults, as perceived by the students themselves;- A 97% on-time graduation rate, in a district with a dropout rate of nearly 40%.
Community Relations Planner
I facilitated community-planning processes for the King County Department of Transportation's transit and roads division, representing the interests of the elected county executive, as mandated by the county council. The work included advising department technical staff on planning efforts, outreach and communications that targeted hundreds of residents and dozens of area corporations, businesses, and elected officials. It also involved the creation of websites and collateral materials for the projects, some with a cost of nearly $100 million.
Executive Director / Start-Up Captain
I was transferred to the city to lead the start-up effort of the Seattle office of this AmeriCorps national service organization, providing opportunities for a diverse group of 17- to 24-year-olds to help improve schools and communities through a year of citizen service. The initial launch of the program four years earlier had been aborted. I was able to repair relationships and build new alliances leading to the successful re-launch of the effort — with an annual budget that expanded to more than $1.5 million.. As a result, some 60 young people annually provided more than 1,700 hours each of service in Seattle schools and neighborhoods.
Program Director
I was invited to join the team as a founding director due to my deep knowledge of the Cleveland community and my extensive work with young adults in service projects. For this legacy project celebrating Cleveland's bicentennial, I developed service partnerships with schools, community centers, and regional agencies for each of the six corporately sponsored teams of diverse 17- to 24-year-olds. This work included training and preparing a staff of six professional team leaders and a corps of 60 young adults, a quarter of whom also were working on their GEDs in the first year of the program. This effort continues today and has resulted in nearly 2 million hours of community service to Cleveland schools and neighborhoods by City Year AmeriCorps service members.
Director Of Community Outreach
I was the founding director of this office, promoting community service-learning opportunities that connect outreach opportunities with academic courses to deepen both the quality of the service to the community and the learning experience for the college students. Annually, these program involved more than 25% of the undergraduate student population in various community-service efforts, including an innovative program that had students living year-round in a center that provided various programs to the surrounding inner-city neighborhoods in Cleveland. Partnerships included community development and local gardening programs addressing issues related to adjudicated inner-city youth.
