MidSummer Advisors is a specialized advisory practice (primarily within fintech, data analytics, and data security) with particular expertise in (1) early stage venture management and (2) optimizing post-merger outcomes related to strategic acquisitions. MidSummer has been my periodic home for nearly 20 years in-between my CEO roles and founder activities.In 2022, I took on a new role with MidSummer Holdings, a small family office based in San Diego, California, as Managing Director.

While this assignment represented a departure from my usual fintech/data security focus, as it turned out the requirements for commercializing "Kelly's Wave" were a good match for my technology development and new venture background. My introduction to this new venture began in early 2016 when MidSummer was retained to help the founders map their forward strategy in conjunction with a (then) potential merger with the World Surf League. When that merger was completed in late 2016, I was invited by the WSL to lead the WaveCo through to its transition to a commercial and global enterprise as the Company's first President. I remained the senior leader through the venture's critical early-stage milestones by leading our great team to deliver the perfect wave at the Surf Ranch for both the Future Classic and Founder's Cup professional events. A fascinating project that capped my efforts with the WSL involved the planning and development of an 80-acre Kelly Slater Wave facility outside of Tokyo to serve as the WSL's APAC showcase.

Equinox Payments was the third largest provider of payment terminals and related enterprise software and systems in North America (behind VeriFone and Ingenico). It was the product of a DOJ-mandated spin-out of former Hypercom North American assets in order to gain approval for the merger of VeriFone (NYSE:PAY) and Hypercom (NYSE:HYC) in 2011.The company developed and deployed a broad portfolio of secure payment terminals and enterprise software tools to customize and manage the hardware. With operations in Eastern Europe and Asia, the Company sourced technology and managed procurement on a global basis.I joined the Equinox board of directors immediately after its spin-out and re-cap and then added the Chairman and CEO roles in June of 2012 to see to the Company's restructuring and re-organization as well as prepare the company for eventual sale. Equinox was successfully acquired by BrookField Asset Management (NYSE:BAM) in February, 2014.

We developed and commercialized a specialized and highly usable method and enterprise tool set for data encryption (format preserving encryption "FPE"​), crypto-translation services, and cloud-based terminal management platforms all delivered in flexible models from SaaS to client-server to white-label.Semtek's technology and architecture have become the payment industry's de-facto standard for encrypting card data embedded on magnetic stripe payment cards across the major retail sector and has become a significant global franchise for VeriFone.

EWI, acquired by Blackhawk (NASDQ:HAWK), built a highly disruptive SAS delivery infrastructure and enterprise application suite that enabled the real-time electronic processing and provisioning of stored value payments for major retailers, banks, and payment processors. As a first mover and innovator in the digitization of stored-value and pre-paid payment products, EWI's technical innovations hastened the mainstreaming of alternative payment methodologies by the major payment networks which today have become global product category leaders for all of the major issuing banks, payments processors, and card brands.

This venture had it's start as Transit America, a company I co-founded that became the anchor asset in a large roll-up of complimentary assets backed by CIBC/Wood Gundy. I led the Municipal Outdoor Group, a business unit focused on developing a portfolio of municipal-based marketing rights in collaboration with cities and counties nationwide. When we combined these properties with our traditional outdoor assets, we achieved a media reach competitive with radio and television media.
