Both Vincent DePaul and Alfred Adler believed in the great potential of people and society to work together toward positive growth and change. There are three philosophical constructs which link the Vincentian and Adlerian theories: a.) Phenomenology, b.) Holistic perspective, and c.) Encouragement. Philosophically, Vincentianism and Adlerianism adhere to a phenomenological orientation that emphasizes that each person perceives the world in a unique and personal manner. Phenomenology challenges me to deeply listen to the subjective realities and frames of reference of people. This philosophical orientation provides me with empathic concern for others and fosters the building of social and professional relationships. Vincentian and Adlerian values also espouse the principle that collectively “we” can make a significant and systemic difference for poor and discouraged people. Holism for Vincent DePaul and Alfred Adler was about bringing together dispersed and discouraged individuals, communities, and societies into unity and an indivisible whole. For Vincent and Adler, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The two theoretical frameworks of Vincent and Adler approach advocacy, education, and empowerment by utilizing positive encouragement for people to come to liberation, knowledge, and freedom.
