Consultant
BCS is a boutique management consultancy that works exclusively in the Financial Services sector. While at BCS I worked on two six month projects at two large multinational investment banks, one American and one European. My responsibilities included:• Understanding regulatory changes and business process to scope, develop and deploy changes to Credit Risk systems, managing offshore development and UAT with business users.• PMO - producing key project management documentation and processes, including using RAID logs, JIRA, MS Visio, SharePoint. Delivered updates for senior stakeholders and facilitated workshops. • Project support: financial analysis, and managing Purchase Orders and Acceptance Certificates.Key Project Work• Basel III – A six-month project to understand the potential impact of draft regulations. We successfully mapped the key impacts areas to Credit and Market Risk calculations at a large multinational investment bank. I was responsible for successful delivery of Credit Risk feed changes.• “Know Your Customer” (KYC) – I was head PMO on this project responsible for project processes and documentation as well as facilitating workshops and providing commercial analysis.
Business And Technology Consultant
As a Project Manager at a large Telco, in their Business Intelligence & Analytics Domain I was responsible for the delivery of a Master Data Management solution end to end, from writing the contract and managing the IBM team, client and suppliers through to closure. I have also managed to closure a number of fixed price and T&M contracts as well as Testing work orders, taking full responsibility for all aspects of the delivery (including: commercial, client facing, delivery). I also gained practical experience of implementing an agile approach to solving a complex, but uncertain problem in a complex piece of inherited legacy software. I found innovative contractual solutions to implement a Scrum framework over three months to explore the issue with the client and propose and implement a solution. My final project was to take over as a delivery manager on a very high profile (£1m+) and business critical Project (C-Suite visibility). I had to close out our delivery stage and manage a challenging SIT/UAT period with multiple vendors and client teams. It was a rewarding challenge managing both the delivery and the necessary communications. My first client was a large FMCG, where I took on a Commercial Delivery role. This taught me the important fundamentals of good commercial management of projects and the detail behind accruals, forecasting, invoicing, contracting and pricing opportunities. I then moved into both Bid and Project Management roles which required team management, requirements gathering, pricing, selling and delivering projects, the largest of which was an Agile based Services-to-Assist program for a sales force automation mobile application.
Jcr President
This position required both relationship-management and self-management and I learnt to be a flexible, quick learning and creative team player. In promoting the Junior Common Room (JCR) and Durham University to internal and external clients, I provided leadership for an organisation with a turnover of £250,000 a year, and successfully represented students on high-level university committees. I worked closely with senior university staff, including the Vice-Chancellor, on a wide range of issues, from IT provision to Charity and Employment Law. This honed my ability to manage change as I provided strategic direction for the JCR, College and University. I also lead the College Executive Committee, overseeing the biggest budgets in the JCR with each of the twelve members having a specific responsibility, such as student welfare or social events.
Jcr Chairman
As Chairman I set the agenda and directed Executive and General Meetings of the JCR. I ensured balance in discussions and decision making in the key areas of the JCR involving: capital spending proposals; co-ordinating large events (such as balls, dinners and Freshers’ Week); and ruling on matters of interpretation or discrepancy in the governing documents. Critical and inventive thinking enabled me to contribute the vast majority of constitutional changes in light of the 2006 Charities Act and to secure a better future for the JCR.
Senior Durham Students' Union (Dsu) Representative
Campaigning for election to the Executive Committee required me to interact with almost every college member to persuade them individually of my suitability for the position. As the Senior Representative of the Durham Students’ Union, I led a team in achieving a college record for student participation in the Union. I used my position as a point of contact between college, Students’ Union and University to secure the highest rate of student participation of any Durham college over the previous five years. While meeting with the NUS president and local MPs I advanced policy on accommodation charges and value. In submitting and defending various motions, for example, calling for a full costing of the University Estates and Facilities Department I analysed complex sets of outcomes and implications and defended my proposals against thorough investigation and prepared opposition. Success in this arena depended on insight and persuasiveness.
Research Assistant
This position required high quality analytical skills to sift through some 15,000 documents of primary source material for an academic piece on British Far East Command in the 1960s. I was required to communicate abstract arguments succinctly in person, by telephone and by e-mail. My research also required field-work in the jungles of Borneo and Malaysia, living among our hosts, the Bidayuh villagers of Kampung Stass.
