About Patrick Lammas

I grew up on a farm in Tasmania, where I developed a love for both the outdoors and the beach which remains to this day. When I was seven, my family moved to Melbourne and then in late 2016 to New Zealand just in time for me to start NCEA the following year. I achieved great results in school and managed to secure a few scholarships by the end of college but I had no idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I had never been very enticed by the prospect of an after school supermarket or retail job, so instead, during my school holidays I worked for various companies in construction and landscaping. These were outdoor jobs, working with tools and machines that appealed much more to me. So, after school, I deferred my scholarships and went to work for MAP Projects as a trainee machine operator/general hand. The project manager/engineer I was working under knew of my scholarships and that I had intentions of returning to study at some point so he began to give me some small tasks more centered around the project management and engineering side of the job. Over the following year, I became familiar with reading and understanding the project plans including quantifying and procuring materials and components across the job, completing GPS setouts and As-Builts, QA and Health and Safety Auditing and records, pricing variations and completing preliminary monthly progress claims among other things. The variety of work that was going on across the projects I was involved in was also a huge positive for me. I gained experience in concrete works, pipe-laying, earthworks, piling, roading, drainage, structural steel work, landscaping and much more. I enjoyed that there was so many different parts to the jobs and that each day could be different.I absolutely loved being able to extend myself and try new and exciting things while working and this experience pushed me towards a degree in Civil Engineering. I am currently enjoying studying a BE(Hons) majoring in Civil combined with a Diploma of Engineering Management while still working part-time for MAP.

Engineering Trainee

New Zealand

Transitioning from working on the ground full-time to taking on more and more engineering and project management tasks involved a lot of adapting and learning. The project engineer was a huge help in mentoring and guiding me. Whenever he gave me something new to do he said; "See how you go with this and then come and ask me if there is anything you're not sure about." This proved to be an extremely effective system and I learned how to read and understand the plans, calculate what materials were needed for a job and how much, estimate costs and durations for different work and learned how to use the GPS software and the project design for both set-outs and As-Builts. Working in this environment also exposed me to the day-to-day experience of running a project, including managing subcontractors, negotiating with the clients and working together with the client and designers to solve problems as they arose. I also learned how to adapt to different situations and adopt different communication styles depending on the audience. I gained an appreciation for how many different parts to running a project there were as I worked with the quality and health and safety managers to ensure all parts of the projects were running smoothly and all data that needed to be collected and recorded was and that the processes in place were effective and efficient.Towards the end of the project I even gained some experience in the financial aspect of the project, pricing up variations and completing preliminary progress claims. When I decided to go to university to study Civil Engineering, I was assigned the task of making sure there was someone who could replace me when I left. So, during my last months I began training other members of the team in the various parts of what I was doing, from GPS work to variation pricing. While studying, I continued to work for Map during my holidays, learning many more new things along the way.

Trainee Machine Operator/General Hand

New Zealand

Started in early 2020, working in Papamoa constructing a pond complex and surround landscape, learning how to drive articulated dump trucks, rollers, water trucks etc. When that project started winding down I was shifted to a wastewater treatment plant construction job near Morrinsville. Learned about site establishment, putting up silt fences and building a sediment retention pond before the real project started. Initially started with the main earthworks of the two large treatment ponds but soon became much more varied. I enjoyed learning from the more experienced guys and working as part of the team during pipe-laying, concrete pours and steel-tying. Working with the crane during lifts and sheet-piling was very interesting, and required good communication and teamwork. I had loads of questions and really appreciated that the guys who had the experience were happy to answer them and teach me how and why we did the things we were doing. I got to work with guys who were experienced with concrete, with building, with earthworks and crane operation as well as loads more.

Feb 2020 - Mar 2021

Landscaper

Tauranga, Bay Of Plenty, New Zealand

General Labor work full-time throughout the summer holidays. Building fences and decking, laying lawns including ready-lawn and seeding, Constructing retaining walls and the like. Great summer job, working outdoors and gaining experience with hand and power tools as well as manual labor with shovels and wheelbarrows. Loads of variation from day to day so no way to get bored, learned a lot of new skills working with timber, concrete and soil.

Nov 2017 - Feb 2018

Laborer

Tauranga, Bay Of Plenty, New Zealand

General Laboring job working on the Southern Pipeline Project at Memorial Park during the school holidays. I was involved in the pipe thrust itself which ran in 12-hours shifts, half working during the day and the other half on the nightshift. Learned to work well within a team involving 6 cranes and multiples excavators. Developed good communication skills utilizing both hand signals and radios. Initially worked during the 2-week school holidays and must've done something right as I was invited to "come back whenever I had spare time." Very interesting project for a first job and made some good friends.
