Foreign Correspondents Club Of Malaysia PresidentForeign Correspondents Club Of Malaysia Dec 2019 - Aug 2023Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory Of Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaI was the president of the Foreign Correspondents Club of Malaysia, the only association in the country that caters to the needs of up to a hundred journalists and other media staff working for foreign-based news agencies and companies. In my position, I have regularly met and negotiated with government officials including the police, advocating for better and freer working conditions for the press in Malaysia, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing official lockdowns.During the pandemic, I collaborated with the Health Ministry and other press associations in Malaysia for members of the press to receive early access to Covid-19 vaccinations.I have also headed the push for the creation of special communication channels for the foreign press community with newsmakers and government ministries/departments, making it easier for distribution of information by newsmakers.I spearheaded the redesigning of the FCCM's website and its membership cards, oversaw and cleaned up the association's membership roll, and regularly hold social networking meet-ups (which were postponed during the lockdown but have since resumed as the pandemic wound down) in Kuala Lumpur.I have also planned, managed and moderated events (both physical and virtual), often leading teams that resulted in full seating capacities at event locations.

Video JournalistStar Media Group Berhad Apr 2016 - Jul 2017Petaling Jaya, MalaysiaMidway through The Star, I switched portfolios to take on a dedicated video reporting role, in a move to learn more about the visual side of journalism. In my new role as the department’s video journalist, I experimented a lot with mobile phone videos, coming up with a short news documentary shot almost entirely with the iPhone and looked into portrait-mode videos for mobile viewers. I was also collaborated with my cameramen to produce hard-hitting news features involving various topics such as the Orang Asli logging blockade of 2016 (named later as the company’s best video feature that year). On a day-to-day basis, I provided voiceovers for some of the voiced news packages, wrote and edited news video scripts and was involved in some basic video editing using Premiere Pro. I was also in charge of StarTV’s social media pages (now merged with The Star as a whole) and managed to increase its reach tenfold over six months to a year without spending a single cent on advertising campaigns. -
