I have previously served (for 6 years) as board member and state treasurer for the St. Vincent De Paul Society in South Australia. My responsibilities in this role as board member and treasurer were to ensure the mission, values and aims of Vinnies were upheld. This included providing sound financial oversight, including working with paid staff and a large group of volunteers in the development of annual budgets, a three year capital expenditure plan and also to provide leadership in all aspects of governance and risk management, strategic planning and the development of leadership capabilities within a large volunteer network. Through this position, I developed an understanding of the nuances of working with an organization comprised primarily of volunteers and the important link between employees, volunteers and other stakeholders of the organisation.

Management – acted as branch manager (for several different areas, responsible for up to 15 staff). I was employed on a Grains Research and Development Corporation grant to provide statistical support to the National Wheat and Barley Molecular Marker Projects (NBMMP/NWMMP). This position involved the collation, cataloguing and analysis of both genetic and phenotypic data for barley and wheat. I was involved in the implementation and development of the SHERPA database. This required me to become familiar with MS Access, liaise with computer scientists, cereal breeders, cereal chemists and molecular biologists to determine their needs and requirements with respect to a database.The major focus of this role was to analyse data arising from the National Barley Molecular Marker Program (NBMMP) and National Wheat Molecular Marker Program (NWMMP. I analysed wheat and barley field trail and genetic data with the aim of identifying significant Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs). The primary statistical technique was mixed models in which the phenotypic and genetic information is combined into in a single analysis.

I was employed as a consultant biometrician to provide statistical analysis, advice and designs to the plant breeding groups of The Victorian Institute for Dryland Agriculture (VIDA) on a national project.Through this position I acquired a number of skills, including a high level of communication. As a consultant biometrician I had to communicate complex statistical ideas to non-statisticians, plant breeders, farmers and other agricultural workers.I designed and analysed hundreds of plant breeding trials and worked closely with senior management on the statistical issues arising out of field trial systems. This included determining the probability of selecting the correct plant varieties based on a range of phenotypic and genetic traits.In this role, I gained experience in the use of specialist statistical packages of S-Plus, Genstat and ASREML.
