This required me to become familiar with MS Access, liaise with computer scientists, cereal breeders, cereal chemists and molecular biologists to determine their needs and requirements with respect to a database.The major focus of this role was to analyse data arising from the National Barley Molecular Marker Program (NBMMP) and National Wheat Molecular Marker Program (NWMMP. I analysed wheat and barley field trail and genetic data with the aim of identifying significant Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs). The primary statistical technique was mixed models in which the phenotypic and genetic information is combined into in a single analysis.
Plant Breeding Biometrician
I was employed as a consultant biometrician to provide statistical analysis, advice and designs to the plant breeding groups of The Victorian Institute for Dryland Agriculture (VIDA) on a national project.Through this position I acquired a number of skills, including a high level of communication. As a consultant biometrician I had to communicate complex statistical ideas to non-statisticians, plant breeders, farmers and other agricultural workers.I designed and analysed hundreds of plant breeding trials and worked closely with senior management on the statistical issues arising out of field trial systems. This included determining the probability of selecting the correct plant varieties based on a range of phenotypic and genetic traits.In this role, I gained experience in the use of specialist statistical packages of S-Plus, Genstat and ASREML.
