Undergraduate Research Assistant
I applied for the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award in order to pursue working as a Summer Research Assistant for Professor Jennifer Drake. I was fortunate enough to receive the award and gain extraordinary amounts of useful civil engineering related experience and knowledge. As an Undergraduate Research Assistant, I observed and worked with Professors and Graduate students on their numerous studies. These included studies such as: - The effects of Green Roof parameters on storm-water retention, cooling and biodiversity - The cooling effects of Green Walls on buildings - The effects of integrating Photo-voltaic Cells and Green Roofs together - The effects of catch basin inserts - Flood frequency analysisIn addition to this, multiple conferences/work field trips allowed for additional opportunities to learn about sustainable engineering. These included:- ICPI conference on Interlocking Concrete Pavement- Tour of Connon Nurseries- Tour of a completed Bioroof green roof above the Native Child and Family Services of Toronto- Tours of Sky solar photo-voltaic installations (completed and under construction)I was also able to take part in the Undergraduate Engineering Research Day (UnERD) with a fellow research assistant. We took on the project of looking at the First Flush Effect on pavement on the University of Toronto campus. This included taking samples with an automatic water sampler and testing them for numerous metals.Other work involved creating graduate research informational videos and a research poster (attached).
Undergraduate Research Assistant
As part of my undergraduate research position, I also worked at the Green Roof Innovation Testing Laboratory (GRIT Lab). I collaborated with masters of architecture and landscape architecture students on 3 different phases of the lab: 1. Green roofs, 2. Green walls and 3. Photo-voltaic cells above green roofs. The most significant project which we worked on was the design and installation of multiple sensors on Phase II of the lab. This included installing data loggers and measuring out distances for wires of sensors such at tipping buckets, anemometers, thermocouples, pyranometers and soil moisture sensors. These sensors were also installed and troubleshot. Other lab weekly tasks included counting biomass, weeding, and troubleshooting numerous sensors and data loggers.
Tennis Instructor
As a Tennis Instructor, I conducted tennis lessons for week long tennis camps and afternoon tennis lessons with class sizes ranging from 2-14 students. I effectively taught individuals by understanding their age (Ages 4-16 and adults) and skill levels (Beginner to intermediate) and then developed suitable lessons tailored to their specific needs. I also developed communication skills when speaking with numerous individuals such as parents, students, fellow instructors and community members.
