I qualified as a solicitor with Clifford Chance at a time when mobile phones weighed a couple of kilos and the internet was still work in progress for Tim Berners-Lee. I moved in-house to join Bombardier Aerospace in Belfast as Director, Legal Services in 1997 (my first use of email for business). I transferred to Toronto to become VP Legal in 2001 (my first PDA-palm pilot) and subsequently to sunny Derby as VP Contracts for Bombardier Transportation (my first use of SMS technology for business). More recently, I have been fortunate to be able to benefit from the increasing demand for alternative types of legal support from in-house legal teams and I have undertaken a series of projects with some UK household names. I recently completed an eighteen month assignment at Capital One, an internet based credit card business that describes technology as its beating heart and is truly an inspiring place to observe and support leading edge tech developments. I also recently completed a project for one of Ireland's leading law firms.I am convinced that law firms and in-house legal teams must embrace (not just respond to) digital disruption in order to flourish in the 21st century. I am fascinated with the revolution occurring in the way legal services are delivered, particularly the entry into the legal market of so many innovative new players. I am fortunate that these developments, smart technology and the digital era allow me to enjoy an exciting modern career.
