About Patrick O'Neil
Fail fast, and don’t be afraid of trying, because you learn more by doing than you do by thinking about doing. My role has three parts:1. Accelerate growth by making connections between our customers’ needs and what our company can do for them. 2. Build innovative capabilities using our core technologies and open up new markets and opportunities. 3. Monitor activity around the globe and plan satellite imagery collection in advance of or in response to major events, such as emerging crises and natural disasters. The Favorite Part of My Job:• Advancing the state of the art for dynamic monitoring.• Working with customers to solve their most difficult problems.• Exploring what is possible with an incredible team.About me:I lead a team dedicated to thinking outside the box -- because my role requires problem solving, not just problem finding. We say YES when others say no. We approach developing solutions by combining creativity with relentless hard work. And smart work… We don’t take a mindset that we’re just a satellite imagery company, we’re a dynamic monitoring company, which means we’ll use the best data and analytical tools for the job. Our platform supports wide-ranging data alongside satellite imagery, and my role focuses on bridging the complexity gap between AI-driven remote sensing solutions and our customers’ needs.

Computing Sciences
Developed a massively parallel watershed algorithm based on topological persistence to be run on NERSC's Edison, a Cray XC30 supercomputer. Analyzed three dimensional high resolution scans of sandstone and volcano rock after using this algorithm for segmentation. These scans were collected at the Advanced Light Source cyclotron and had a resolution of a few microns, necessitating the use of supercomputers for analysis. Investigated the internal micro-structure of these rocks using computational geometry techniques. Developed novel way of detecting pair-wise interlocking of grains in samples by computing surface normals of a grain-grain interface and then projecting these normals onto a sphere. The algorithms developed will be utilized in further projects at the lab.
Research Scientist
Conducted extensive research into how covert communication networks can be exploited to reveal information about the internal structure of the target organization. Of particular focus was determining how changes in the communication network can predict future activities of the organization. Developed a novel "Event Participation Detection" algorithm which determines likely participants of a network event based on how their communication patterns evolved leading up to and following the event. Additionally created network simulation tools which allowed rigorous testing of network analysis algorithms. This research was utilized for counter-terrorism purposes but also has applicabilitly to drug cartels or any entity operating a covert network.Developed algorithms to compute conditional and joint probability distributions using global datasets with 30m^2 resolution. These algorithms were used in computing the probability that images were collected in certain parts of the globe. Used information theory to create an AI which builds a real-time decision tree to narrow the global search by asking the user questions about the image based on how much information each question would reveal.
Math Emporium Instructional Assistant
Provided extensive tutoring to thousands of Virginia Tech students. First year mathematics courses (Calculus, Linear Algebra, Geometry) are offered in the Math Emporium via online classes. As these classes have hundreds of students enrolled, the professor can see a small fraction of the students at any time. The instructional assistants at the Math Emporium cover the gap by providing tutoring to anyone who needs help.
Intern
Developed advanced credit card fraud detection algorithms using machine learning. Used factor selection techniques to lower the dimensionality of the input data while maintaining performance.
Summer Intern
Established key elements of project management IT governance suite. Developed critical elements of corporate university project management training program. Designed project management templates and managed the creation of a company-wide project management newsletter.
