My thesis-based project was focused on the issue of mallards overwintering on wastewater treatment ponds in the city of Edmonton. Specifically, I investigated the potential toxicology associated with this habitat use as a result of contaminants within the wastewater. The study primarily revolved around data collected through a sublethal exposure in domestic mallard ducklings supplemented by field observation and sample collection. Field collections (e.g., stable isotope analysis) helped gain a larger context for this situation, while experimental animal morphometrics and lab analysis (e.g., western blots) provided physiological data on mallard health.
