Deputy Safety Officer
In July 2024 I commenced a new and additional role as Event Stewarding Manager at Gateshead Football Club working for Stanley Events Ltd. Under the operational command of the Club Safety Officer and Deputy Safety Officer, this role places me in overall supervision and management of the Stewarding Team for all Gateshead FC matches at the International Stadium.Due to presently undertaking the L4 Diploma in Spectator Safety Management (the "Safety Officers' Qualification"), I now also carry out the role of Deputy Safety Officer at Gateshead Football Club, with a view to operating as the Safety Officer when required, upon appropriate progression in the qualification.Roles and duties of the Deputy Safety Officer include assisting the Club Safety Officer in:The monitoring, reviewing and maintenance of an Operations Manual, and for each event, an Event Management Plan and the Event Record.Internal liaison with the Club senior executive with responsibility for safety and relevant functional areas and departments.External liaison with event organisers, relevant stakeholders, including the local authority, police and other emergency services, and stakeholders concerned with "Zone Ex".Directing the briefing and debriefing of safety personnel and stewards.Overseeing the reporting and initial investigation of incidents during an event.Carrying out all applicable functions in order to ensure the event is conducted and concluded safely, and that all persons present, from fans, to staff, players, and officials alike, are safe throughout.
Neighbourhood Protection Officer / Neighbourhood Warden A/Team Leader
[First employment with this Authority/in this role: November 2010][Continuous Service with this Authority: since October 2012]Following nearly a year and a half as Covid Awareness Coordinator for the Authority, I rejoined the Neighbourhood Protection Team/Warden Service in April 2022, as it continues its modernisation journey, and with the Team having worked continuously to support the County all throughout the Covid years, as an essential Frontline Operational Uniformed Service. In terms of returning to the role itself, the Neighbourhood Protection Team continue to provide enforcement in a wide range of areas, from environmental crime such as Unlicensed Scrap Metal Carriers, Fly-tipping, and Neighbourhood Amenity and Environment issues, through to pro-active planned multi-agency operations together with the Police, DVLA, Environment Agency, and Benefits Fraud Teams for example, in order to target criminals or offenders. In terms of Youth Disorder and Community Cohesion, we further continue to develop and streamline the response and deterrent to Anti-Social Behaviour, and continue to work jointly as a Durham Constabulary accredited and directed resource to tackle such issues - as we continue to play our role as one of the key partner agencies within the Government's recently announced 2023 Anti-Social Behaviour Action Plan ( https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/anti-social-behaviour-action-plan ).
Covid Awareness Coordinator
In late January 2021 I was appointed to the new and important post of "Covid Awareness Coordinator", for Durham County Council. This is a wholly new post, and the key nature of the role is to provide support, advice and guidance around all aspects of COVID-19 regulation, procedures, safe practices, and best practice sharing between partner agencies. The post involves working closely with other Service Groups and Teams within our own Council, and along with Elected Members, as well as communicating and working effectively with MPs and other neighbouring Local Authorities, joint-working and best practice sharing with our many partner agencies and organisations such as Police, NHS, Fire, RSL's, Mental Health Teams, and with Public Health England / National Institute for Health and Protection. In addition the role further involves working with private businesses, organisations and other bodies, to provide advice and guidance around COVID-19 risk and infection reduction measures and procedures, and regulatory compliance.Clearly, with such a new role and post, and given the dynamic nature of the issues presented by COVID-19, the role itself clearly expands, adjusts and adapts, in order to reflect and meet the changing nature of the situation, and moreover, to provide the best possible response and proactive measures possible, in reducing the impact and risks related to COVID-19.It is a challenging and wide-ranging role, but it is also an excellent opportunity for me to make a real difference, affect positive outcomes and change, and perhaps even help prevent loss of life, through delivering effective, proactive measures, advice and support.
Neighbourhood Protection Officer / Neighbourhood Warden Acting Team Leader
"To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily. To not dare is to lose oneself." - Søren KierkegaardFollowing a period with Sunderland City Council as an EEO, I came to realise that over time, I missed the 'more-rounded' role I had carried out for many years as a Neighbourhood Protection Officer with Durham County Council (plus the commute proved much more time-consuming than envisaged). That's not to say my time at Sunderland was in any way a mistake - it goes without saying that the more detailed, specialist knowledge I gained around Complex Investigations, Case File Production, PACE Interviewing Skills and Techniques, Witness Statement Taking, and Environmental Enforcement was invaluable, and will be of immense benefit to me in the future. But I found I missed the more 'holistic' role that I previously held for so long with Durham - the experience of responding to radio taskings on behalf of Durham Constabulary for ASB, or helping to locate vulnerable missing persons, taking part in Multi-agency Operations around Waste Carriers and Scrap Metal Dealers, and a whole multitude of other unexpected tasks that can arise out of the blue, as a first-response resource for the Police - not to mention the more wide-ranging Enforcement regime adopted by Durham County Council. Therefore, in early May 2019, I 'returned home' to my role back within the Neighbourhood Protection Team at Durham County Council, again covering the whole north half of County Durham. So to return to Kierkegaard's wise-words... I merely lost my footing momentarily. But I never lost myself!
Crematorium Technician/Officer
Due to the tragic situation resulting from Covid-19, I was temporarily redeployed into a significantly unexpected, yet essential role, as a Crematorium Technician - initially at Durham Crematorium for my basic training, and then at Mountsett Crematorium, for my detailed training and certification, and industry qualification and licence essential for the role. The role and nature of the post was obviously daunting, saddening, and mentally demanding, but I readily appreciated the vital and important nature of this wholly unanticipated appointment, and demonstrated the highest levels of dignity and respect throughout, resulting in my eventual completion of the relevant tests, certification, qualifications, and licence, which now means that I am formally qualified and certified to operate as a Crematorium Technician/Officer at any point in the future, should such a need ever again arise (though clearly I hope there is never such need for my new skills and knowledge to be put into use).
Health And Safety Workplace Rep
I am a Trade Union Representative and Workplace Organiser for my Trade Union, the GMB, within Durham Local Authority Branch, where my GMB colleagues have been incredibly supportive in giving me guidance, training, and help with my role, in assisting my workplace colleagues in matters relating to employment legislation and workplace practices, as well as general Health and Safety issues.Since COVID-19 unexpectedly affected us, my role has been even more important and relevant, in that I have worked with my employer and Senior Management Team, by being consulted on matters relating to COVID-safe working practices and procedures, in a manner that has been a genuinely excellent example of how employers, Trade Unions, and employees can all work together, for 'the greater good', to identify and deliver very best practices and safe-working procedures, so that all benefit as a result. From April 2021 I will therefore undertake the further relevant training and qualifications necessary to become a designated Health and Safety Rep, too.I am immensely grateful to play such an important role in the workplace, and be able to work so effectively with such supportive employers and managers, and especially to have great support from my GMB colleagues.
Director
I was appointed as a Director and Board Member of TVCRP - the Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership in january 2019.Founded in 2004, the core aim of the TVCRP is to promote, strengthen and protect the role of the Tyne Valley railway line between Newcastle-Hexham-Carlisle, for residents, tourists, employees and service users alike. Working closely with Northern Trains (and other TOCs), we provide the local ‘eyes and ears on the ground’ to facilitate service improvement, through identifying issues or gaps in provision. .Our Objectives:Increase public awareness of existing rail services and products.Promote existing rail travel opportunities.Raise awareness of rail / bus / bike / pedestrian / car interchange opportunities.Assess and record existing public perception of the rail line and knowledge of rail products.Improve information provision at stations and in local communities.Help identify and target new markets for rail travel and develop products to suit.Increase local community involvement in the rail line by building on the existing Station Adopter scheme.Strengthen links between the Train Operating Company and the local communities and businesses it serves. Also working very closely with the Tyne Valley Rail Users' Group (TVRUG), which I in turn Chair, the TVCRP is therefore a formally constituted/registered body, with a role prescribed by the Government through our membership of CRN. We therefore receive considerable delegated formal funding to enable us to seek to achieve these aims and objectives.I now also hold the portfolio post of Interfaces Director, whereby it is my specific role to be the communications and contact link between the Board and its Stakeholders, such as MP's, Councillors, and Rail Professionals, and also carry out the same role between the Board and Service Users (Passengers) too.
Chair
In November 2018 I was directly appointed as Chair of the TVRUG, following the retirement of the previous Chair. In turn, in January 2019 I also became a Director of the Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership too, as the two groups are very much aligned in purpose. The Tyne Valley Line Rail Users’ Group represents all those who have any interest in the rail service that runs from Newcastle to Carlisle. Some are regular rail users, some occasional users, and others, such as Parish Councils, have an interest on behalf of their communities. The group was formed in March 2000 with the twin aims of improving the service offered to passengers along the line, and encouraging increased rail travel usage. The group lobbies the Train Operating Company (currently Northern Rail) and works with bodies such as the Department for Transport, Passenger Focus, Northumberland County Council, Cumbria County Council, TVCRP, and others, around all rail-related public transport issues. Our successes to date include more trains stopping at many stations along the route, and ensuring the first train to Newcastle each day now stops at the Metrocentre. We have helped remove certain ticketing disparities, and improved publicity of ticket types. We have also helped secure refurbishment at Prudhoe and Hexham, and played a part in also seeing Hexham recently win Station of the Year (Medium Size), in the 2018 National Rail Awards. We continue to campaign, amongst other things, for more trains to stop more often at more stations on the line, and for improved rolling stock to be introduced. In addition we regularly keep Northern informed of what it is really like to be one of their passengers. My role as Chair includes communicating effectively with many types of bodies, or politicians (Councillors or MPs, and Regional Mayors for example), as well as managing and actively running the various Social Media platforms associated with the RUG.
Property And Accomodations Director
Haven (Tyneside) Ltd are providers of quality, temporary furnished supported accommodation in the Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead areas. We offer a safe environment to single, homeless people who are referred by one of the many statutory agencies, a voluntary agency, or via Gateshead Portal or Newcastle Gateway. The aims and objectives of Haven (Tyneside) Ltd are to provide accommodation for single homeless people with support needs, and to assist in their resettlement and rehabilitation using strategic training and education, enabling them to move on to appropriate long term housing. This often therefore includes ex-services clients for example. In December 2015 the Charity undertook an extensive recruitment program for a full set of new skills/experienced based Directors to lead the Organisation into the future.I, together with my other new Director/Board Colleagues, therefore drive the Strategic Vision of the Organisation, ensure it's Business Plan and Longer Term Financial Plan are sound for the ever changing environment in which we operate, and looking ahead, seek to expand on our capacity to assist even more vulnerable homeless clients to access much needed quality accommodation. I additionally hold the specific post of Accommodation Director along with my Board position. The appointments process makes us a very 'new' organisation, despite it's previous many years history, and the role is therefore likely to be a challenging one, but is a wonderful opportunity to lead such a worthwhile charity, and make use of the skills, experience, and links I have built up in similar related roles in the past.
Corporate Safety And Security Stewarding Supervisor
I supervise, secure, and coordinate the newest premium Corporate Bar Areas at St James' Park Football Stadium, the home of Newcastle United Football Club, and Manage a Staff Team of experienced Security and Safety Officers, to ensure the safety of the public, staff, Club Dignitaries, and Officials, at all times. I also carry out additional Supervisory roles as required, such as the safety and security of our fans and Club Dignitaries overseas on European away trips.
Director/Self-Employed
Undertake and provide Corporate, Door, and Event Security, with a genuinely professional and customer/client focused approach.During this extended time period I have worked, and indeed continue to work from time to time, as a Door Supervisor or Security Consultant/Corporate Security Supervisor in numerous and varied premises and locations across the whole of the Tyne and Wear, County Durham, and Northumberland region, in a combination of employed, self-employed, and consultative roles.
Environmental Enforcement Officer (Eeo)
At the end of January 2019 I was appointed to the post of Environmental Enforcement Officer (EEO), with Sunderland City Council. This was a relatively new role, within a small but specialist team of Investigators. It was a non-uniformed Officer Post, and aims to tackle a whole range of Environmental issues and offences. It was an independently led, own case-work based post, whereby it was my responsibility to direct a small team of Environmental Enforcement Assistants to attend incidents, record evidence, and make initial locality-based enquiries.Thereafter, my role was to invite to, and then conduct, formal PACE interviews where necessary, issue appropriate enforcement actions or penalties, or more commonly, produce high-quality Court Case files for prosecution of Environmental Offences.I worked with related partner agencies such as Police, Environment Agency, and where appropriate, Fire Service, to name but some, to share intelligence and secure evidence needed to secure such successful prosecutions. This also meant being responsible for managing effective links and dialogue within the Community, to gather information related to issues within my geographic area, and in turn feedback information on outcomes, results, and issues resolved. The workload was challenging, yet rewarding, with the ultimate aim of making Sunderland a better place to live, work, or visit.I enjoyed the opportunity to find new approaches to some of these challenges, and the outcomes these in turn brought, and therefore improve the quality of life, and visual appearance, for all residents and visitors to Sunderland, but after only a relatively short period of time, I found the commute to be a huge challenge, given the location of our actual Team and premises at South Hylton. So I reluctantly returned to my previous employer, Durham County Council, armed with lots of new knowledge, skills and experience as a result however, a few months after first taking up this post.
Relief Neighbourhood Warden/Neighbourhood Protection Officer
Following my appointment as an EEO with Sunderland City Council in Jan. 2019, it was agreed with my previous employer/Authority that I could continue my previous role with DCC, but on a Relief/Zero Hours basis, and I undertook this role until electing to return to the post again in a Full-time capacity from May 2019.(For more information on this role, and what the post entailed therefore, please see previous full-time post entries)
Neighbourhood Protection Officer/Neighbourhood Warden
[First employment with this Authority/in this role: November 2010][Continuous Service with this Authority: since October 2012]Following a spell on a Secondment as Civic Pride Officer over the summer and early autumn, I rejoined the Neighbourhood Protection Team/Warden Service in June 2017 as it continues its modernisation, and continued roll out of ICT and Mobile Case Management and Reporting. I thus continue to feed back to the wider Development Team with any issues around the platform and hardware, or work-based suggestions for additional inclusion and development, in order to provide a Neighbourhood Protection function that is even more efficient, responsive, and capable than ever before. In terms of returning to the role itself, the Neighbourhood Protection Team continue to provide enforcement in a wide range of areas, from environmental crime such as Unlicensed Scrap Metal Carriers, Fly-tipping, and Neighbourhood Amenity and Environment issues, through to planned multi-agency operations together with the Police, DVLA, Environment Agency, and Benefits Fraud Teams for example, in order to target criminals or offenders. Since my last spell (of many) in this role, we again now lead ever more strongly as prosecuting authority for these criminal areas, having won various National Awards in this regard, including Authority of the Year. And in terms of Youth Disorder and Community Cohesion, we further continue to develop and streamline the response and deterrent to Anti-Social Behaviour, and continue to work jointly as a Durham Constabulary accredited and directed resource to tackle such issues.
Civic Pride Officer
Carried out an Internal Secondment as a Civic Pride Officer with Durham County Council, in order to assist in bringing additional capacity and knowledge to the small, specialist team. The role was to work in coordinating, developing and delivering high quality, efficient and cost effective Civic Pride activities, which are in turn responsive to community need, and continue to strengthen the Councils' reputation through the visible delivery of a clean, safe and attractive environment. I undertook a community engagement and education role that aimed to change attitudes about a wide range of environmental issues, and support and empower volunteers to make a difference in their local area. I also carried out frequent educational sessions in primary schools, as well as coordinated on certain school, youth and community projects. The role was quite different to my more enforcement based previous posts, however I have relevant knowledge and experience from the many housing or neighbourhood based roles I have held.It was therefore an exciting opportunity for me to play a direct part in promoting County Durham, raising it's profile, and improving the quality of life for its many residents and visitors!
Neighbourhood Warden Team Leader (Acting)
Carried out another further extended Secondment as Acting Team Leader in order to coordinate, manage, and directed a team of highly committed staff, to provide a professional and efficient Neighbourhood Warden service for the whole Northern region of County Durham. This included a pro-active as well as response based service to the public for incidents of Anti-social Behaviour, partnership working with Durham Constabulary as a full front line Policing resource for ASB and many other roles, and being the prosecuting and investigatory authority for incidents of Fly-tipping, Scrap Metal issues, and all other localised environmental crime. As Team Leader the role required regular partnership working, and briefings and planning meetings with partner agencies such as the Police, Fire Service, Drug and Alcohol Reduction Agencies, and the Environment Agency, as well as regular reporting at various Councillor led Committees, and relevant Public/Residents Meetings and Police PACT Meetings.
Enviro-Crime Investigations Officer/Neighbourhood Warden
Following a six month spell back on secondment within the Neighbourhood Protection Team, I enjoyed the return to the front-line nature of the work so much I elected to move back permanently with this new job role. For the avoidance of doubt, the new role/ title was a specialisation within the Neighbourhood Warden post itself, but merely using the substantive title would not properly or adequately describe the new specialisation. From June 2016 therefore, I served as the specialist officer for the full North half of County Durham, with responsibility for targeting and investigating Enviro-crime, and in particular, offences such as Fly-tipping, supported in this individual specialist role by a team of Neighbourhood Wardens.Due to the particular nature of the role, being that of court prosecution for most offenders, it is not appropriate to highlight a detailed explanation of the post on a public and open forum such as LinkedIn.But it can be stated that the work was interesting, fast-paced and dynamic, and of a demanding nature, requiring sound investigative techniques, an eye for detail, and an ability to challenge and ask the right questions, and spot any flaws in interview responses and "pull at the threads" accordingly. It required a great attention to detail in producing high quality Case Files for Court, and identifying all relevant possible charges to be submitted. In return however, the role was hugely rewarding, through being the specific person responsible for tackling this problem, and then seeing positive results and outcomes when cases finally reach Court. In addition to the individual specialisation described above, it again meant working directly with Durham Constabulary on an evening and weekends as part of the wider Substantive Warden post, as a front-line Police-led Resource, in tackling incidents of Anti-social Behaviour and Community Safety Problems in the North half of County Durham.
Neighbourhood Protection Officer/Neighbourhood Warden
I took a Secondment away from my then role of ASB Officer, in order to rejoin the Neighbourhood Protection Team/Warden Service as it underwent a wide-ranging modernisation and move to ICT led Mobile Working, using Tablet Computing and newly developed case management software. I found being back within my previous Service both interesting and fast-paced, and readily became optimistic that Mobile Working and a move away from paper-based case management would be both beneficial to the staff themselves, as well as realising efficiencies and indeed new opportunities for the Organisation, and I enjoyed testing out the scope of the new equipment in this secondment role.In terms of the role itself: as before, Neighbourhood Protection Team provide enforcement in a wide range of areas, from environmental crime such as Unlicensed Scrap Metal Carriers, Fly-tipping, and Neighbourhood Amenity issues, through to planned multi-agency operations together with the Police, DVLA, Environment Agency, and Benefits Fraud Teams in order to target criminals. Since my last spell in this role however, I found we now lead even more directly as prosecuting authority for these areas. Additionally, we now provide an even more streamlined response and deterrent to Anti-Social Behaviour, and continue to work as a Durham Constabulary accredited and directed resource to tackle such issues.
Anti-Social Behaviour Officer
Responsible for delivering an effective and efficient Antisocial Behaviour service to improve the local environment and promote Community Safety, with a case management approach embedding a full "Think Family" ethos.Undertaking comprehensive and often complex investigations relating to antisocial behaviour, and preparing and delivering coordinated appropriate action plans in conjunction with partner agencies such as the Police, YOS, SCU, to resolve investigations - this includes being the Lead Professional where necessary. Carrying out site and Home visits in relation to cases, as well as covert surveillance to witness incidents and secure evidence.
Neighbourhood Warden Team Leader (Acting)
Coordinate, manage, and directed a team of highly committed staff in order to provide a professional and efficient Neighbourhood Warden service for the whole Northern region of County Durham.
Neighbourhood Warden
Responsible for the issue and enforcement of fines for incidents relating to litter, rubbish accumulations, and dog fouling, as well as the investigation and detection of Fly-tipping and other such incidents such as metal theft. Additionally, the role involved a first response on behalf of the Police, for all incidents of low-level Anti-social Behaviour, along with the wider role of Community Education and Involvement.
Director
The Smarterbuys Store Ltd is an ethically led and ran "White Goods Credit Provider" based in North East of England, which offers Social Housing and Local Authority Tenants nationally and in Scotland, the opportunity to obtain home appliances, white goods, and other electrical items via credit, at a more affordable rate, and safer manner, to existing (and oft-berated) high APR High Street Shops. It is genuinely ethically led, being born from an earlier Social Enterprise, itself created by an existing RSL in the Durham area.It works in partnership with member RSL's and Local Authorities, to provide credit goods access for their tenants. Direct application is currently not possible, as one of the key drivers for the organisation is to ensure affordability, and avoid financial difficulty or distress to customers. For this reason referrals are normally made through the relevant Housing Provider in the first instance, due to the knowledge and relationship they have with their tenants.--I joined the Board in March 2018 as it sought to expand its size and skills, and in turn increase growth and customer size, whilst also moving to become a fully independent organisation from it's previous RSL existence. Its strong desire is to continue to be ethically led and hold a full social ethos, and therefore provide a very real, safe, and more affordable option for often lower income families, than the high APR existing High Street Stores. My role as a Board Member and Non-Executive Director was to ensure collective responsibility and good governance, and maintain a social ethos and ethical focus, whilst increasing recognition and market knowledge of our organisation. I enjoyed my time as a Board Member, and feel I made a positive contribution to its long-term future and viability. I stood down however in February 2019, after being appointed as Chair of a different Board I also sat on, coupled with a change in full-time roles, making attendance much more difficult.
Board Member - Neighbourhood Services Committee
In October 2016 Riverside Group created a new "Neighbourhood Services Committee", to replace the previous six Divisional Boards and its former Housing Services Committee it operated, with this single new national Board, with greater remit and responsibility instead. Its role was to support the Board of The Riverside Group Limited (TRGL) by undertaking the detailed consideration and monitoring of services provided by its social housing business and Riverside Home Ownership arm, and, where necessary, provide advice and make recommendations. In effect, it was the joining together of the oversight and scrutiny roles of the previous six Divisional Boards, together with the Operational Delivery of Group Board policies and plans, that was part of the former Housing Services Committee. Its role in Service Delivery, Oversight, and Scrutiny is substantial and important, especially given continued changes to Welfare Reform and Social Housing policy and legislation, and I very much enjoyed playing an effective part in ensuring Riverside continues to be a strong, stable, secure and even larger Housing Provider in the years to come, delivering for its 90,000+ tenants and residents its vision of "Transforming Lives, Revitalising Neighbourhoods", and maintaining our superb "G1/V1" Regulator Rating, and "Aa3" Moodys Credit Rating (correct as at time in Post). I valued my time as a Board Member immensely, only reluctantly standing down with sadness in February 2019, when my 9 years (total involvement) with Riverside Group was reached, and Corporate "Good Governance" Rules it adheres to, require all Members to then stand down.------------Riverside Group Key Metrics (2016, at time of appointment): Assets c£2bn. Revenues c£360m. c3,000 FTEs. (Again, correct at time in Post).
Chair - National Tenant And Residents Federation Executive
Riverside "Tenants and Residents Federation Executive" was the then body that represented all of the many Tenants and Residents of Riverside Housing Group nationally - the 5th largest Social Housing provider in the UK with c.51,000+ stock, and c.90,000 tenants and residents across all sectors (figures correct for time in Post). From April 2014 I held the role of Chair of the organisation, steering it through challenging times as a result of Government changes to Welfare Reform and Social Housing, as well as properly and effectively establishing our new style body, and new focus.Following a change to my personal circumstances and housing tenure, I therefore retired from the role of Chair in September 2016, as I felt it was important that the role be carried out by a sitting tenant. However on retiring from the post, I was immediately asked to remain a part of the Officer Group, and was subsequently appointed Vice Chair. In both roles I represented those 90,000+ tenants and residents as a 'voice and platform' for working with Riverside to provide the best possible services and solutions for all Tenants and Residents. We lead on change wherever possible, and were the key "Consulting Body" to canvass views and feedback for Riverside Group. Pro-actively, we sought to influence progress and development within Riverside, as well as externally through organised campaigning on Social Housing Issues, Welfare Reform and "The Bedroom Tax". This included lobbying of Ministers and Members of Parliament on matters and legislation affecting or relating to all Social Housing tenants and residents nationally, not just within the Riverside Group. The Role was often Challenging, but always rewarding, and was ever changing and developing, to adapt to the similar ever changing landscape it operated within, in the Social Housing Sector.
Divisional Board Member
From early 2010 through to October 2016, when they were then abolished, I sat initially as a Tenant Board Member, then later a full Independent Board Member, of the North Divisional Board of Riverside (TRGL), a major national Charitable Social and Supported Needs Housing Provider, Our own Divisional Board, one of six nationally, covered an area from Scunthorpe across to Manchester and the Pennines, up to the Scottish Borders, with a diverse geographical spread of stock, and equally as diverse a customer base. My role, along with the other Board Members, was to ensure the Strategic Direction and Business Growth of the organisation was sound and viable, through an attention to detail and an ability to ask the appropriate questions of Senior Management, and hold the Director Team to account as necessary, in a supportive environment and framework. The high quality Board supervision and support we provided, meant that we continue even now to hold the top ratings for Governance, and the highest Credit/Financial Competence Ratings with both the Regulator and Moodys, across the sector, at a time many other providers are having such ratings reduced.----------Following a full Organisational Restructure in October 2016, Riverside moved from a "six Division" makeup, to a "larger three Region" structure, and as part of this, retired their six Divisional Boards as well as their national Housing Services Committee, replacing all them with one single combined Neighbourhood Services Committee, with greater role and responsibilities. I am very pleased to be able to say that I was one of the limited number successfully appointed to this new Board in October 2016, and this replacement/new post is listed separately above.
Trustee
Together with the other Trustees, we managed all the affairs and running of the Dunston Drop-In, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation which acts as a resource for young people living in Dunston and the surrounding area. To better explain what the "Drop-In" is, some information from its constitution should give an indication of it:Its aims: Providing advice and assistance (through specialist staff), and organising programmes of physical, educational, and other activities, as a means of advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities, and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals. To allow them to advance in education, to relieve unemployment, and by providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare...The role was time-consuming, but rewarding, ans the Drop-In provides a valuable 'life-line' for young people when the Local Authority removed all funding for such previously Council Supported or provided groups. By taking over the enterprise and running it as a CIO, we managed to ensure a vital community asset was therefore protected for young people.
Neighbourhood Warden (1Yr Ftc)
Responsible for the issue and enforcement of fines for incidents relating to litter, rubbish accumulations, and dog fouling, as well as the investigation and detection of Fly-tipping and other such incidents such as metal theft. Additionally, the role involved a first response on behalf of the Police, for all incidents of low-level Anti-social Behaviour, along with the wider role of Community Education and Involvement.
Councillor
Served three non-standard length elected terms as Local Councillor, initially for the Teams Ward of Gateshead, then later the combined Ward of Dunston and Teams. I was additionally appointed Vice-Chair of Sustainable Communities Scrutiny Committee, as well as Board Member of the Gateshead Housing Company, and also Group Chief Whip.I also served as a Board Member of "Bridging Newcastle/Gateshead", one of the then Government's six Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder areas/Boards tasked with improving housing in areas of key need/issue.
Board Member
Served as Council nominated Board Member, on the Board of the then newly established Gateshead Housing Company, the Arms Length Management Organisation (ALMO) set up to manage Gateshead Council's 25,000+ Housing Stock Portfolio, and to ensure it achieved the required 3 star rating from the Regulator, necessary to secure the funding needed to carry out the Government's "Decent Homes" Improvement Program.
Board Member
Tenant Board Member of a local Charitable Non-Profit Social and Supported Needs Housing Provider.I then went on to be one of the lead members of it's sub-group tasked with identifying viable strategic options for its long term future at a time the then Regulator was requiring all RSL's to be of a minimum stock size.Through my work and evaluation undertaken with colleagues, we then went on to take the decision to join with Riverside Group, which at that time did not have a presence in the North East Region, and in so doing, become it's North Divisional area. I later joined Riverside Group itself as a Board Member, a number of years after leaving NWHT when my term of office came to an end.
