I manage medical records through REDCap and EPIC-based electronic medical records (EMRs) and maintain HIPAA-sensitive patient documents containing information relevant to the P2P Clinical Trial. I participate in research lab-related events like meetings and workgroups related to the project's status, ongoings, and future. In addition to these managerial roles, I continuously take part in active in-person recruitment by visiting our associated clinics, attending recruitment fairs for trial participants, and maintaining the duties I initially learned as a volunteer like following up with trial participants and informing patients on the mental health-oriented mission of P2P.

As an intern during the EMPATH Lab Internship, I evolved my understanding of the infrastructure that goes into operating a clinical trial through increased weekly volunteering hours in the EMPATH LAB, headed by Dr. Benjamin Van Voorhees MD, MPH. Through shadowing experiences with the project managers, an increase in participant caseload to manage, and being given the ability to perform self-guided projects allowed me to expand my knowledge surrounding the EMPATH Lab and clinical research as a whole.

Path 2 Purpose is a free, voluntary program for teens to improve their mood and learn coping skills. Pioneered by leading universities, this study is a clinical trial to determine how best to help teens build healthy lifestyles and prevent feeling depressed. I participated in the recruitment of adolescent patients ages 13-19 via. phone and through in-person recruitment within various clinics including UI-Health pediatric and adolescent medicine clinics, Maxwell Family Clinics, and Mile Square Health Centers. I dealt with the enrollment process of participants into the study according to established research protocols, maintained detailed records of communication with research participants in our data management system (REDCap), maintained and processed required paperwork, as well as conducted literature searches. I participated in IRB human subjects training (CITI Training) and maintained appropriate professional competencies and compliance with human subjects training requirements. Furthermore, I trained newly hired volunteers in recruitment practices and other related study protocols, conducted research study activities and tasks as needed, and performed other related duties as assigned.

As a ChicagoCHEC research fellow, I participate in an intensive summer experience that prepares individuals for careers in social, behavioral, and biomedical research and in healthcare. During the intensive 8-week program, fellows meet with leading scholars in basic, clinical, translational, prevention, control, behavioral, and population research over a course of research rotations at Northwestern University, the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Illinois Cancer Center, and Northeastern Illinois University.
