I am responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Racing Operations Division for both Phumelela and Kenilworth Racing, including all racing venues (which collectively holds 325 race meetings per annum) and training centres. In my role I am responsible for policy and management of the Racing Fixtures, Race Programming, Stakes, Race Times and Raceday Operations for Phumelela and Kenilworth Racing. In addition, I represent Phumelela and Kenilworth Racing on the various industry Boards, Committees and Forums.

Registration of owners, management of owners’ BHA racing accounts, naming of horses, publication of the race programme, providing the weight adding function for the BHA handicappers as well as taking the entries and declarations for 10,000 races annually in the UK before distributing this pre-race data to the wider press on behalf of the BHA. My role as Racing Director was to manage the BHA contract and the racing team at Weatherbys who deliver these vital services to the British Racing industry.

Heading a small enthusiastic team (which I assembled from scratch), we made great strides as one of the most popular smaller jumps racecourses in the UK. With significant investment in racecourse facilities, the racing surface and prize money, coupled with innovative management and marketing and improved customer service in all aspects of the Plumpton racing experience, racecourse attendances, race sponsorship, betting and hospitality revenue all showed impressive growth during my tenure.The role gave me an excellent grounding in all aspects of business management in an extremely competitive commercial environment. On the broader industry front I represented Plumpton in the negotiations of TV Media Rights and Bookmakers Picture Rights contracts, in the Annual Fixture Allocation Process, Race Programming, Racecourse Association Members Forums and numerous other forums - all during a time of great change and uncertainty within the British Horseracing Industry.

In my role as GM of the Racing Association, I was integrally involved in the amalgamation and corporatisation of the racing clubs in South Africa under the umbrella of publicly listed company Phumelela Gaming & Leisure Ltd.The Racing Association was established to champion and safeguard the interests of racehorse owners in the environment of a corporatised and profit driven industry. To this end we negotiated a contract with Phumelela Gaming & Leisure Ltd which inter alia guaranteed a lucrative prize money policy into the future (linked to all forms revenue generated by the new company) and the maintenance of the general infrastructure of racing by the company into the future. I also represented owners’ interests on the many Industry committees.

During my five years at Newmarket I gained valuable early experience of the business of racing, raceday operations, fixture planning and race programming.

I worked mainly in the pedigrees, racing information and racing records area, gaining valuable knowledge and experience of the breeding and bloodstock world.
