OneThird is a start-up company aiming to reduce food waste by predicting shelf-life and taste of fresh produce through the use of data-science, AI and non-destructive testing. I developed predictive algorithms combining various (big) data sources, (greenhouse and weather data) and spectroscopy. Furthermore, I design and guided the experimental work of testing shelf-life with various non-destructive methods.

As a senior scientist I provided content and creative leadership to the Data Science Team. The team leveraged a combination of multivariate statistics, design of experiments, machine learning, deep learning, image analysis, software development and lean startup to:•The development of new software and data structures for X-ray separation of seed lots, with increased yield and efficiency, including commercial introduction.•Prediction of optimal process parameters and germination performance for seed lot enhancement such as disinfection, based on near infrared spectroscopy.•The development of software for the automation of seed germination testing.•The development of software and hardware for automated measurements of single seeds based on near infrared spectroscopy.•The prediction of seed quality parameters, such as storability based on GC-MS or near infrared spectroscopy.•Cooperation with Marketing and Sales in the development of new business models, through business model canvases and lean startup.

As a program leader I was involved in the research direction and leadership of the Seed Technology department. The team was studying seed technology applications and seed quality by cooperation with breeding, marketing and the supply chain. Seed quality can be increased by a combination of breeding efforts, seed production research and seed technology. I was also directly involved as project leader/scientist in research for breeding, seed production and seed technology for various vegetables and field crops.
