From day one at USI, the pace of change was rapid and constantly increasing, as the business shifted from a holding company to operating company orientation. Highlights of my tenure included full ownership of all financial planning and analysis activities, including creation of the annual operating plan and monthly results presentations. Limited finance and accounting staff offered the opportunity to wear many hats, and dig into new projects being undertaken. Strong revenue growth, effective cost savings initiatives and a successful recapitalization combined to make the company attractive to outside investors, offering the opportunity to work with private equity and investment banking firms, a process ultimately culminating in the successful sale of majority ownership twice in an 18-month period.

As a company focused on the creation and management of loyalty and incentive marketing programs for large corporate clients, Carlson Marketing was undergoing a significant transition during my tenure, adapting to the game-changing shift brought about by the internet, and customers desiring more flexibility in the pricing and operation of their programs. An environment of flat fees for technology hosting and retained staff was replaced by the desire for hourly and per-minute models, coupled with feedback that demonstrated the effectiveness of the dollars they spent. Converting call center and IT operations to shared staff costing models, creating new client pricing structures tied to enrolled members or system interactions, and helping to transition thousands of ongoing projects from multiple disconnected systems to a shared platform during the company-wide ERP implementation are accomplishments that stand out from my time at the company.

Carlson Companies shared-service Finance organization supported multiple operating groups, including Carlson Hotels, Carlson Wagonlit Travel and Carlson Marketing, across three primary verticals. My initial experience in the Order To Cash (OTC) function had primarily a P&L orientation, with client invoicing, revenue recognition and monthly review of ongoing projects with client teams occupying the majority of the workload. A subsequent move to the Accounting To Reporting (ATR) group broadened the focus, offering my first interactions with balance sheet items, including reviews of reserve accounts and cash flow modeling. Each role offered exposure to different areas of the business, as well as different day-to-day activities, an excellent place to learn and grow.
