I have been a practicing general surgeon and surgical oncologist for almost 30 years in Houston, TX. Throughout this time I have been heavily involved in surgical resident and medical school education both in the operating room and the classroom. I have won multiple teaching awards, including the 2014 Houston Educator of the Year, awarded by the UTMB School of Medicine. That same year I also won the Outstanding Teacher of the Year for surgical resident education.I have taught a weekly didactic course in surgery for many years. This course runs on a 2.5 year cycle, with the intent that residents will be exposed to each topic twice during their 5 clinical years. The goal of the course is to provide a formal, structured approach to surgical education outside of the operating room. The course content is available online @ www.basicsurgerycourse.com. A written manuscript is also in progress.I am also a capable computer programmer. I worked as a programmer/analyst for four years before medical school. I have kept my skills up with online courses and self projects. In addition to the content, I did all the programming for my course's webpage - front end, back end, and database.I am studying machine learning and recently completed a postgraduate program in artificial intelligence and machine learning given by UT Austin McCombs School of Business. I am currently enrolled in another course from the University of Chicago on advanced statistics and machine learning. My ultimate goal is to develop interactive, 'smart' learning tools for medical and surgical education.
