About Patsy Pizana

Growing up I did not feel a passion for anything. I often wondered what my life would be like as I got older, because I had no idea what I wanted to do or who I was. Growing up in South L.A I was often told I was never enough, or that I would just be another highschool dropout. Sure enough, I dropped out of high school and became a mother at the age of sixteen. I allowed others to determine my outcome, by believing what I was being told. After two years of being a stay at home mom, I decided to work but unfortunately I had no social capital. I ended up working at the fashion district in Downtown L.A,for a couple of months then later obtained a job as a cashier in a fastfood restaurant in which I worked for about a year. I must say that I respect our fast food workers because I was not happy. I decided to enroll in school and obtain my G.E.D. and finally scored a job working with survivors of domestic violence. I fell in love with that job. I knew I wanted to do more, and help more. Therefore, I made the decision to pursue higher education. I obtained my associates degree in 2021 from Los Angeles Trade Technical College. I finished my last year there during the pandemic which is the most difficult thing I have done. Managing four children, home, and five classes was a challenge but not impossible. I am proud to say I am now a Cal State Dominguez Hills alumni. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in sociology with honors. I am now on the path to build the life I did not imagine I could have. Despite my many obstacles, I persevered and I decided what my life can look like. Knowing that I can make a difference in the lives of others, and the lives of my own children is what has kept me going all these years. I also had the opportunity to be a peer mentor during my last year at Dominguez Hills and it reinforced my passion to continue working hard to be the difference in someone’s life, by helping, listening with compassion and understanding. I am excited to continue this journey of learning and hope to find the opportunities that will aid me in a career in social work.
