I edited stories/graphics and write headlines/captions for news, features, business and editorial stories for the Chicago Tribune. I also served as a slot (last person to read stories before publication) for print.

I edited local and wire news as well as business stories. I also wrote headlines/captions and edited graphics. I also slotted (gave a final read to) the work of fellow copy editors.In spring and summer 2009, I was inspired by author Barbara Kingsolver's book "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" and decided to try to grow vegetables in containers on my fire escape. I kept a blog called Greenhorn Gardening on PilotOnline.com as I shared my experiences. A few weeks into the experiment, a colleague joined me on the blog as a backyard gardener.

I worked as a rim editor and backup slot for metro stories and filled in on business, features and national/foreign desks. I copy-edited a project about Philadelphia police handling of sexual assault cases that led to reforms and became a finalist for the 2000 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service. I also helped organize occasional roundtables for discussion of work-related issues.

In addition to working as a rim editor and a slot, I served on a liaison committee to foster collaboration between copy editors and reporters. The committee presented a two-day training seminar featuring editing guru Carl Sessions Stepp when we were anticipating a new pagination system by the Danish company CCI.

I worked as a rim editor and a slot for metro news. In 1990, I attended a three-week seminar at the University of Missouri called the Multicultural Management Program (MMP), led by Yves Colon. Guest speakers included Henry Gates Jr. I also participated in my second Knight-Ridder session for copy editors, again led by Alex Cruden.

I worked as a rim editor for about three years before being promoted to desk chief. I completed a 10-day professional development session for news editors and copy desk chiefs at the American Press Institute in Reston, Va. I also participated in a Knight-Ridder seminar for copy editors at the Detroit Free Press, led by Alex Cruden, a highly regarded champion of copy editors who gave seminars throughout the Knight-Ridder group.
