My main focus was on taking a very experimental prototype and completing is colet the product design and implementation of RAID5 and RAID6 storage protection for a complex distributed/clustered file system tuned for video editing, capture, and playback. This software ran in embedded storage blades. 1-16 storage blades and 1-2 switch modules made up an ISIS storage chassis/crate. At the time, an ISIS system consisted to 1-12 rack-mounted storage crates interconnected via the switch module(s) in each chassis/crate modules. For large storage demands, clients, running video editors, or video capture and/or playback software, can use the storage on multiple ISIS systems. Since the project leader wanted to work on something new/different at Avid, I was being groomed to take over project leadership of the storage blade software.

Within months of joining the Marathon engineering team, I made significant contributions to a new High Availability product variant that had an aggressive six month time-to-market schedule. Management and the other engineering team members were aware that I had been 'thrown into the fire' and had to make new product enhancements at the same time that I was still learning the existing product. I'm a excellent self-starter, and was able to make my contributions with little interruption to the other engineering team members, many of which have been working on this complex systems software product for 10+ years. The new product shipped on time. My major technical contribution to the new product was to add SMP support to the Virtual Server and CoServer Fault Tolerant IO subsystem. Since the product has close ties to the Windows operating system, and we provide a custom HAL for the Virtual Server component, and provide several drivers on the IO CoServers and Virtual Server; this was much a much more complex task than simply adding a few spinlocks. In addition to working on Marathon's new High Availability product, I also contribute to maintaining and enhancing the flagship Fault Tolerant product. Most recently, I have been the project leader of a project that integrates Marathon's two products via a common codebase. For this project I was directly involved in debugging Marathon's custom HAL, and x86 assembly/instruction-level programming and debugging.

2004-2005 Oracle Rdb Engineering and HP OpenVMS Engineering Senior Consultant/Project Leader, Oracle/HP TAC contractor Operating system and network stack internals expert consulting with Oracle's Rdb Engineering team on the port of the Rdb database product to the Itanium platform/IA64 architecture. In addition to consulting with Oracle's Rdb engineers on Itanium platform and IA64 architecture issues and associated changes to the OpenVMS operating system that impact the port of Rdb to this platform/architecture, I was directly involved with the coding and debugging of the platform specific Rdb components on the Itanium/IA64 platform. Acted as a liaison between HP's OpenVMS Engineering organization and Oracle's Rdb Engineering team in resolving issues impacting Rdb under OpenVMS on the Itanium platform. Provided the Oracle Rdb Engineering team with my expertise on the IA64 architecture and Calling Standard, and exception/condition handing under OpenVMS on the Itanium platform. Analyzed process and system crash dumps and provided a detailed analysis of the cause of such crashes. Assisted in analyzing Rdb test system failures on the Itanium for the Oracle Rdb engineers. Gained experience with pthread exception handling, SQL, and Rdb operational procedures.2002-2003 OpenVMS Engineering - Software Engineering Consultant Designed and implemented Condition/Exception handling for the OpenVMS operating system running on the Itanium/IA64 architecture. Worked as a team member of one of the best operating system development groups in the industry to port the OpenVMS operating system to the IA64 architecture. Joined the team early on and was involved in design decisions, implementation, initial debug, and first boot activities.

I joined Bright Tiger Technologies early on in the startup phase of the company to work on the IP fail-over component of the product. Allaire Corporation acquired Bright Tiger Technologies after having already bundled a subset of the ClusterCATS components with the Enterprise version of Allaire's Cold Fusion server. The ClusterCATS components are now also available with the Enterprise version of Allaire's JRun product. I represented Bright Tiger's development/engineering group during visits to several customer sites for product demonstrations, installations, and troubleshooting complex problems. Prior to Allaire's acquisition of Bright Tiger, I was one of the points of contact between the engineering groups at Allaire and Bright Tiger for the ClusterCATS components bundled with Allaire's Cold Fusion product. This paper was published in Volume 4 Number 4 of the Digital Technical Journal.Provided technical consultation to the engineers startingto port DECnet/OSI (Phase V) to the OpenVMS Alpha platform.Individual contributor to the effort to port DECnet Phase IV from the OpenVMS VAX to the OpenVMS Alphaplatform. Most of the team was unfamiliar with OpenVMSoperating systems internals so I provided technicalleadership to the project leader and other team members.The team received an Alpha Achievement Award, from theAlpha Program Office, for early completion of projectcommitments. This achievement was recognized in the Q2/Q3FY93 issue of FOREFRONT. Designed and implemented C2 security support for DECnetfor OpenVMS (Phase IV). This work was included in theOpenVMS cluster configuration evaluated by the NCSC (National Computer Security Center). I made a presentation on DECnet security features to the NCSC.
