I have written about economic issues for more than forty years, first as a reporter at leading news organizations and later as the author of several books about international economic institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization. I am currently a Senior Associate (Non-resident) with the Economics program at the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS).After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, I attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, and spent most of my career reporting for The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. My current home is Kamakura, Japan, where I live with my wife, Yoshie Sakai, and I’m a father and grandfather. One interest of mine, following our experience of living through the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, is the Fukushima nuclear accident, which I've written about in several publications. But economics remains my main professional focus; my sixth book, published in September 2019, is "SCHISM: China, America and the Fracturing of the Global Trading System," and my next book, to be published by Yale University Press in early 2025, is "KING DOLLAR: The Past and Future of the World's Dominant Currency."
