Paul C. Johnson became the 17th president of the Colorado School of Mines on July 1, 2015, where he is also a professor of civil and environmental engineering.Prior to that he was the dean of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University and a professor in its School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment. While at ASU Johnson also served as ASU's associate vice president for research, and associate dean for research, interim dean and executive dean for the Fulton Schools of Engineering. Prior to joining ASU, he was a senior research engineer at Shell Development Company in Houston.Johnson’s expertise is in soil and groundwater remediation and risk assessment, specifically, the design, monitoring and optimization of soil and groundwater remediation systems and the monitoring and modeling of exposure pathways. His work forms the basis for current practice for many widely applied technologies and regulatory guidance in the area of risk and exposure assessment. Johnson served as the editor for the NGWA's journal, Ground Water Monitoring and Remediation from 2003 through 2011. He also served on the National Research Council Committee on Future Options of the Nation’s Subsurface Remediation Effort from 2010-2012. In 2011, he received the Keith E. Anderson Award for outstanding contributions to NGWA’s Scientists and Engineers division.In 2014 he received the Nathan Burbank Environmental Educator of the Year Award from the AZ Water Association and was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award in Remediation by Brown and Caldwell.
