The Centre for Rare Diseases works with over 70 separate clinics for patients with rare diseases, across a wide range of disease areas. We work closely with our colleagues in the Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospitals Trust, Rare Diseases team to provide holistic care for patients with the rarest of conditions across the whole age range. We focus on multi-speciality clinics to simplify the care for these patients to improve the quality of life for the patients and their families. We work closely with the Institute for Translational Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the University of Birmingham within the Birmingham Health Partners organisation. Our aim is to improve the understanding of these complex conditions through expanding the phenotypic and genotypic descriptors of these conditions.

NIHR CRN is the clinical research delivery arm of the National Institute for Health Research, that is responsible for clinical research within the NHS system. The Cardiovascular portfolio, includes sub-speciality groups in Prevention, Atherosclerosis, Cardiac Surgery, Heart Failure, Congenital & Pulmonary Hypertension and Arrhythmia. I am responsible for the Congenital & Pulmonary Hypertension and Arrhythmia portfolio. The NHS has a strong reputation for clinical research in these areas working with industry partners in a diverse range of clinical study areas, including arrhythmia management, device therapy, stroke prevention, pulmonary hypertension and is looking increase clinical research in the area of congenital heart disease.
