I took the long road to my current location. As soon as I graduated from college I took a job as technical support for a small software company. I was glad to have the job seeing as how the economy had been suffering from the .com bust. The job was not glorious but I worked hard to be the best I could. During my free time I worked to assist small businesses get their operations online. This would be noticed by my employer and would lead to an opportunity to work in development. Due to the small nature of the company it was just myself and one coworker on this project when I was suddenly thrust into the primary role after the person was asked… Um told to leave. I took over the whole project and made it a success. Unfortunately a layoff occurred after several years there. As this was my sole experience I found myself behind the technology curve and ended up taking jobs that worked with the outdated classic asp technology but still utilized modern relational databases like MSSQL and Oracle. While I worked, I educated myself on the newest technologies and was able to land a job at a huge retail organization. I got my foot in the door by doing less glamorous work of updating servers, LAN settings, moving applications, maintaining SQL databases, and a small amount of updating code. As I proved myself I was moved to a new team utilizing the latest technologies. .Net and .NetCore alongside the latest and greatest AWS services. I was really enjoying the work and the people I got to know there. Unfortunately again this would lead to my current layoff. I look forward to my next adventure where I hope to be of value to my new company and of course my new coworkers.
