Career experiencesStarted as a young apprentice working in a Ford Main Dealer as a workshop Technician. Working through the ranks to become the assistant to the workshop controller and then Reception Manager. Looking back I see that quite early on in my career I had the basic attributes to lead people, I was also excited by exceeding customers expectations. I started in education as a Lecturer, became fully qualified as a Lecturer and Subject Learning Coach soon after. (more recently Assessor and Internal Verifier) My attributes mentioned earlier, would pave the way for me to perform at an excellent level and become successful in the educational world. Leading by example, fostering good working relationships with staff and students, actively listening to all, highly respecting everyone I came into contact with to ensure there was learning, fun and enjoyment, not forgetting having quality at the heart of everything I did. Also always going the extra mile I progressed to team leading position. Moving across the A5 I began my management career where I was faced with correcting the misfortunes of two under performing areas, significant progress was made in the first year which enabled my temporary contract turn into a permanent one. Leadership does take on many roles, in this instance my u-turn leadership style enabled quality of the departments to fast improve and for staff to realise their areas for accountability. Restructures meant a change in job role where I became a Director over numerous areas. I did not see much of a change regarding improving the areas, developing the scope of provisions etc. but what I did have now were managers/team leaders to manage. Each with their own positive attributes and areas of development I set about improving their practices whilst sharing good practices with them all and all staff under our control. This proved very successful.In this time, I needed to recruit good staff, develop and performance manage staff. Success rates increased, student numbers increase, commercial activity increased and lastly quality of the provision increased to a very high standard.More recently I was the college lead in creating the curriculum for the MTI (MIRA Technology Institute) building and selecting resources to support teaching learning and assessment. A commercial suit of qualifications were also selected to increase income, I negotiated with companies to take advantage of these opportunities. I recently introduced Engineering apprenticeship standards into the area which are proving to be a success in the early stages.
