The main area of my work is to design and manage the delivery of electricity, gas and water networks to meet the client’s requirements. I also need to ensure that the selected design provides the optimal electrical network for both the client and the asset business.Designing substations and verifying design work by others at 33kV and 11kV including work for critical load customers such as data centres.Specifying and tendering high value items such as primary transformers and switchgear (including protection) to meet the relevant DNO/IDNO standards.Securing design acceptance and adoption of assets within all DNO operating areas in addition to Energetics’ in-house IDNO.Issuing work to subcontractors and managing them to ensure that the proposed design is delivered to the required specification. Acquiring earthing designs from industry specialists, ensuring they are installed correctly and successfully tested and verified against the design.Working with the project manager to resolve any issues that may arise onsite.Understanding and interpreting the client's brief to provide the best solution to meet their requirements. Providing formal technical estimates for schemes from HV substations up to and including 33kV primary substations.

My position within the primary system design team required me to analyse the 132kV and 33kV network to identify whether reinforcement works were needed. Undertaking load flow and fault level studies using IPSA+ and PSSE and advising on system constraints.Using the study results to determine if network gaps exist and designing the most economical reinforcement solutions to resolve them.Obtaining technical and financial approval for proposed reinforcement worksDesigning and quoting new generation schemes within the East Midlands for connections to the 132kV and 33kV networks.Managing and accepting design approval submissions from ICPs.Developing the scope and budget of the load reinforcement programme for the period of 2015 to 2023.

Determining the Point of Connection for load and generation enquiries at all voltage levels, and designing the electrical connection to the network.

As an Engineer in the Alliance with Enterprise UK I was responsible for the timely delivery of 11kV and Low Voltage projects. This included substation installations and maintenance and 11kV/LV cable and overhead line works.Whilst in this position I was working towards gaining switching authorisation for Low Voltage and 11kV networks.

As a graduate engineer I spent time with various teams across the structure of Central Networks. I worked within the Construction and Operational departments where I was responsible for project delivery and working with authorised persons during switching operations. I also shadowed Control Engineers as they managed fault situations and planned work.I spent time with the engineering teams looking at Inspection and Maintenance policies, health indicies and risk management and I also undertook 11kV/LV design. I also was able to spend time with the strategy and regulation teams to understand the business frameworks and the forward thinking strategies for the company e.g smart grids.

I spent a year as part of my undergraduate degree with Corus Strip Products at Llanwern Works in Newport. I spent the majority of the time with the automation team where we maintained the plant PLC control systems and instrumentation. During this placement I was also involved with the management of the installation of a new £300k steel shape measurement machine. I also spent time with the maintenance team on the finishing mills where I was involved with daily and downtime mechanical maintenance for the mill systems including the hydraulics systems.
