Paul conducts baseline wildlife assessments for species of management concern for Parks Canada highway infrastructure projects in the mountain national parks in AB (Banff, Jasper) and BC (Yoho, Kootenay, Mt. Revelstoke and Glacier), analyzes data and writes or contributes to Basic Impact Analysis (BIA) reports.Paul was responsible for conducting a preliminary bear hazard assessment of SAGD and mining operations for an operator in the oil sands region in NE AB, and a survey of current human-bear conflict management techniques in North America..

As a senior wildlife biologist, Paul conducted baseline wildlife assessments for species of management concern for oil and gas and infrastructure projects in AB, BC, MB and NWT, and provided senior review and technical guidance for environmental assessments. Designed, coordinated and led field crews during wildlife inventories (breeding birds, winter mammal tracking, bear den surveys, nocturnal owl surveys, acoustic amphibian and breeding surveys, nest sweeps, and remote wildlife camera trapping). Mentored junior staff in ecological survey techniques and wildlife identification. Analyzed biological data and wrote technical reports for Biophysical and Environmental Impact Assessments and Mitigation projects within the oil and gas and infrastructure sectors. Conducted biophysical assessments for SARA (Species At Risk Act) -designated species at risk (Ord’s kangaroo rat, swift fox, burrowing owl) and species of special concern (grizzly bear, sharp-tailed grouse) in southern AB and SK prior to oil and gas development, in support of environmental assessments. Surveys were conducted in compliance with applicable wildlife legislation and guidelines.

Inuvik, Nwt

Responsible for the development, execution and interpretation of management studies on mainland and Banks Island caribou and muskox populations within the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR). Collected baseline information on population size (strip transect and photocensus surveys), age and sex structure, productivity, hunter harvest, commercial harvest, physical condition, distribution and habitat use of caribou and muskox populations. Responsible for maintaining a minimum of 50 collared caribou (net gun capture) for photocensus surveys. Assisted with mark/recapture collaring of tundra wolves and barren ground grizzly bear and aerial telemetry surveys.

Conducted ungulate (moose, deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goat) aerial population estimate surveys in Kananaskis Country, AB utilizing various census techniques: stratified strip transect, block quadrat, winter range surveys. Collected baseline information on the population size, age and sex structure, productivity, distribution and food habits of cougars, black bears, deer and elk in Kananaskis Country, AB utilizing various census techniques: mark/recapture, pellet-group surveys, track counts, ground and aerial telemetry surveys, bear den surveys, investigation of predator kill sites and conducted necropsies. Animals were captured and collared using Clover box traps (deer), Aldrich foot snares (bears) or treed by hounds (cougars).
