In addition, I also organized and conducted the first-ever national NASA citizen science conference in Tucson, Arizona, in June 2019. -
Associate ProfessorUniversity Of North Dakota Aug 2003 - May 2017Grand Forks, North Dakota, UsAs a tenured faculty member in the UND Department of Space Studies, my primary responsibilities include teaching, research, and service. These three areas are described below:Teaching: I teach both undergraduate and graduate courses that include: SpSt 300: The Case for Space; SpSt 425: Observational Astronomy; SpSt 524: Current Topics in Astrobiology; SpSt 526: Advanced Observational Astronomy; and SpSt 528: Space Environment and the Sun. Research: My primary research training is in the mineralogical studies of asteroids via near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Data are obtained from the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea, Hawaii.In addition, I am continuing to develop my expertise in the area of solar physics. My first paper studying the intrinsic rotations of large sunspots in three solar active regions was published in The Astrophysical Journal in 2013. This research is continuing, expanding, and will result in submission of a NASA proposal to the Heliophysics program in 2015. Primary goals of this project include determining if the observed rotation is apparent or real, and if rotation is seen in the chromosphere as well as the photosphere. Another fundamental goal is to better determine if this rotation, if it is real, is directly associated with the generation of solar flares.Service: While I have served on a few department and university committees, my primary service contribution is as the Director of the UND Observatory. -

These include two 16-inch aperture optical telescopes and one 10-inch aperture optical telescope.Site renovations began in 2005 when the site included two non-functional telescopes. Funding obtained from UND Aerospace, ND Space Grant, alumni, faculty, private donors, and ND EPSCoR, worth ~$300,0000, have assisted in renovating and expanding the site to its current state. It includes two components: 1) a Research Infrastructure Development (RID) program, and 2) a NASA EPSCoR Cooperative Agreement Notice (CAN) research solicitation.Responsibilities for this position include guiding the overall programmatic direction and priorities of this program; releasing solicitations for faculty seed grants, graduate student funding, and NASA-relevant travel; writing funding proposals and progress reports; and awarding grants.I assisted in the awarding of the first NASA EPSCoR CAN award in North Dakota, worth $741,000 for a lunar exploration strategy that is being implemented by the Science Investigator, Pablo de Leon.I have also focused this program by creating five Research Focus Areas, which are designed to enhance and support existing NASA research within the state. The RFAs include: 1) astronomical/planetary science research, 2) planetary space suit research, 3) Earth sciences research, 4) materials sciences research, and 5) small satellite development.

I have worked to focus the activities of the Consortium by developing five Research Focus Areas that will hopefully build upon existing NASA research in the state. Administration of this program includes developing the overall programmatic goals for ND Space Grant, writing annual budgets and proposals, visiting and communicating with the Consortium affiliate members around the state, attending regional and national NASA Space Grant meetings, and awarding scholarships and research fellowship to undergraduate and graduate students across the state.
