I have enjoyed a 3 decade career as a designer, art director and director of both animated and live action projects, with a special emphasis on stop-motion.I began my career as a designer, model maker and sculptor, lending my skill to such diverse projects as sculpting aliens for Star Trek V and creating miniature sets for the opening titles of Pee Wee’s Playhouse. I helped set the tone for a variety of commercial campaigns, including the first several Chevron “Talking Cars” spots at Aardman Animations in 1994, a campaign which continues to this day.In the 90s, I became Senior Art Director at Will Vinton Studios, overseeing the design demands of all studio output. In that capacity I became production designer as well as episode director on the Fox TV series, “The PJs” over its three season run, for which I was nominated for an Annie award in 2000. I also directed the first episode of UPN’s, “Gary and Mike” and the pilot demo for Warner Brother’s,”Slacker Cats”.Joining the directing team at Bent Image Lab in 2003 I directed numerous commercials for clients including Kellogg's, Quaker, Chips Ahoy!, Hallmark, Tractor Supply Company, Ensure, Cartoon Network, Lowes and Aflac. In 2014 one of the series of web spots I directed for Boston Pizza was chosen for competition at The Ottawa International Animation Festival. in 2015 through 2017 I had the pleasure of serving as production designer along with Academy Award winner Adam Stockhausen on Wes Anderson's critically acclaimed animated feature, Isle Of Dogs (2018), for which we received the Art Directors Guild award for Best Achievement in Production Design for an Animated feature. I served in the same capacity on Henry Selick's Netflix feature, Wendell and Wild (2021) and the Apple TV+ children's series, Shape Island (2022).My visual style has always been guided by a love for cinema history, and I have curated monthly film screenings at Mother’s Bistro in Portland, where I live with my wife, the internationally acclaimed filmmaker Joanna Priestley.

Senior Art DirectorWill Vinton Studios Aug 1995 - Sep 2001When I came to WVS, there really wasn't an art department so much as a talented cadre of free-lancers who were brought in on a job by job basis. I established a formal department there and staffed it with character designers, puppet fabricators and model makers, and managed that group with the intent of creating continuity from from job to job. The department grew over the years, and came to full blossom in 1998 when I acted as Production Designer on the Fox TV series, The PJ's and had the opportunity to staff the production with dozens of incredibly talented artists and craftspeople, and help create what had easily been at the time, the most elaborate stop-motion TV series produced in the US. -
Stop-Motion Art Director - Mars AttacksWarner Brothers Jun 1995 - Sep 1995For a brief period this film was intended by Tim Burton to be an homage to Ray Harryhausen films, and the Martians and their spaceships were to be realized with stop motion models created by MacKinnon and Saunders, with animation direction by Barry Purvis. I was hired as the Animation Art Director. What began as an exciting opportunity for several folks in the international stop-motion community began to unravel early on largely as the result of a general mistrust on the part of the studio honchos towards the technique, and eventually the aliens were generated through CGI by Industrial Light and Magic. -
Set DesignerAardman Animations Jan 1995 - Feb 1995Bristol, United KingdomI designed the sets for the first several Chevron “Talking Cars” spots at Aardman Animations in 1994, a campaign which continues to this day. -
