Like many other VAT advisors, I began my career with HMRC but, after only 4 years, I decided to make the jump into private practice. I have never looked back. There are many things that I love about what I do - but the two things that give me the most enjoyment are, firstly, helping businesses to save money and, secondly, helping them to successfully defend their position when they have been challenged by HMRC (perhaps facing very large assessments and/or adverse rulings). In both cases, being able to use my technical expertise and negotiation skills to deliver real tangible value for my clients continues to give me a thrill. Working in a regional business means I get exposure to a very wide range of businesses as clients - from very small start-ups to very large international operators. However, most of my clients over the years have been clients operating in the Retail/Consumer Products sector and in Manufacturing/Industrial Products. At KPMG, I am a Director in the Midlands part of the practice, leading the delivery of Indirect Tax services to our corporate clients. -
