About Paul Box

Paul‘s career has been spent at the forefront of the information systems field, developing and applying innovative solutions to improve the use of information in decision making. He is recognized internationally as an expert in geospatial information systems, has a strong track record of successful delivery in a wide variety of application areas, with extensive experience working in Asia, Africa and Australia. He is an excellent communicator and is passionate about the role of information in making the world a better place. Paul currently works at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Land and Water and is responsible for developing and leading a program of research into the design and implementation of large-scale distributed information platforms for government and science. In this role, he is responsible for setting research direction, science communication, developing partnerships, and initiating and leading projects. Currently, he is building a ‘social architecture’ practice bringing together social science, economics and institutional analysis to guide and inform the development of information infrastructures (or systems of systems) that underpin effective policy and decision making. This builds on 10 years of research, design and implementation of spatial (and other) information infrastructure in the marine, hydrology, biodiversity, agriculture, smart cities, climate and disaster application domain. Prior to joining CSIRO, Paul worked for nearly two decades in Asia and Africa for the United Nations, government, and not for profit organizations, designing, implementing and managing geospatial information capability to support World Heritage conservation, sustainable development and humanitarian response in post conflict settings.
